Hi all,

Probably been asked a million times before, but what are these actually like to run. I’m considering one as my next car.

Someone close to me used to specialise in Ferraris and has point blank told me not to buy one.

Hearing stories about manifolds, ball joints failing every few years, actuators at 6 grand a pop and abs bearing faults at 5 grand a corner ?

I’m not scared of running costs, but I’m just trying to gauge how bleak it can be and separate scare mongering from genuine concerns.

Any thoughts appreciated,

No better person to talk to than http://www.avengineeringltd.com/

360's and 430's are his thing. He knows them inside out and you'll get a pretty straight indication of real world costs.

It can be very bleak and if you start asking people "how bad it can get" you will definitely not want to buy one!

Yes, somehow need to avoid the outliers; good start speaking to the right people, getting a thorough inspection , look at service history/invoices.
Not all 430’s will result in eternal damnation

Most 430's will have had manifolds sorted out by now so can't believe this is still much of an issue. Couple grand or so otherwise - not end of world.

Suspension parts definitely a consumable... hardly ruinous though and Hills parts wear much better so once done you're good !

Don't have F1 so maybe more issues with those but my car has been rock solid for the past 7 years - looked after by Aldous @ AV - the best !

P.s. Get one - they are awesome thumbup

Firstly Thankyou very much for taking the time. This is really useful!

Thankyou also to everyone else who has commented so far. Great stuff.

I run an Aston at the moment fyi. So not like I’m not used to odd things that can cost a few quid atleast.

Apologies for hijacking the thread but I see that you are reasonably local to me. Please would you let me know which main dealer you used for servicing and whether you would recommend them? My 2007 F430 Spider needs a service this year and the prices that you have stated look pretty decent.

Thank you in advance,

Danny.

They are great cars, just like any car go in knowing what it could cost you.

Bloody love mine, had ball joints done last year so hopefully clear for a few years.

Get it bought and use it.

I just had mine serviced and, yes, the ball joints where on their way out. This does seem to be a weak spot. I had the full set of upper and lowers replaced at the front, it came to about £1500 including labour at QV. Nothing else was flagged up during the service. The service itself was in the region of £800 I think.

If the possibility of a grand or so being added to the service bill for something like that every few years was a worry then I most certainly wouldn't be running a 15 year old supercar!

mine is definitely cheaper than my wife! I have had a F430 Spider since new 2008 the first 8 years, no major faults, the last 6 it has cost about 16k GBP ex service & tyres, there is a standard list of things which go wrong after 20k miles. The engine itself is fundamentally very sound though, its all the engine auxiliaries & suspension
