Buddy of mine has just got a 458 and the discs feel noticeably rough to the touch, I know the ones on my Aston are glass smooth, should his feel the same or are Ferrari discs different?
Replace or can they be bedded in again maybe?

If they are rough to the touch I would imagine that's the pad material. In my experience you need that grittiness on the disc for the brakes to be working nicely. I've just had to "deglaze" my 458 pads again today actually so I would say its OK. They certainly aren't like a mirror finish.

They will have been tracked and are now on their way out

They are CCM brakes, the outer finish has been worn through due to extreme heat cycle and now the carbon fibres in the disc are oxidising

They will work fine, but will start to chew through pads quicker and eventually the disc will oxidised enough to be below min weight and require replacement

They need to be like glass to indicate they haven’t been abused

Pork CCB brakes have a much more durable outer finish which can withstand greater heat cycles

Completely incorrect information. My discs have 3k on them and were brand new when I got my car and they have never had a glass like finish. Its also just been serviced at a main dealer with no issues reported.

They are visibly different to say a mclaren disc so the manufacturing must be slightly different.

Just to check... Neither Aston nor Ferrari look like glass but should they be glass smooth to the touch?
Aston is and that's all I have to go by.

They shouldn't be rough to the touch. Likely either track use or cleaning chemicals has damaged/oxidised them.

A photo would help to confirm.

If they’re rough to the touch, they’re most likely knackered and need to be replaced.

The only way to be sure is to weigh them.

Ferrari use the same ccm discs as Jaguar F-TYPE and Mclaren and I have personal experience of both of those discs being knackered after track use where heat was allowed to go beyond normal operating temps

They should be glass smooth to TOUCH

If they are not, it doesn’t mean they need instant replacement, or won’t work as well...but they have been compromised and will not last 100k+ miles like a looked after set would on road miles

Thanks for all the inputs everyone, I've passed them on, I'm sure it will get resolved.

They should be smooth when new. The pad cannot contact any part of the disc that is below the surface. All the "craters" do nothing for braking performance - your effective contact surface area is reduced.

Mine are rough to the touch, Ferrari gave them an amber rating at last service at beginning of year.

Get Ferrari or specialist to give them a look over, might just be a little worn.

If you need to replace Tarox offer a steel solution now which is around £2000 for front and year, so a big saving over the 10-15k dealers try to charge.

No idea if they are still around but I had my 430 ceramic discs refurbed for around £2500 about five years ago by Sicom in Germany.

That is a great price if still around, I also see Girodisc do steel replacements as well for around £2500, there does seem to be more options coming available as I suspect a lot of 458 owners don't fancy 10-15k brake replacement charges.
