For a decent Front and Rear Blackvue with its own dedicated battery, you're talking £750 + installation,

Pro's

- Peace of mind
- Warning if your car is bumped via the app
- Evidence in case of any issues

Cons

A little costly

What does everyone think about this topic?

I have dashcams in all my cars - although nothing so expensive. McLaren has a front facing NextBase - which has the benefit of Alexa built in, so I can control music streaming by voice which is useful for me.

About 3 years ago, I had an accident on a roundabout when an elderly lady tried to exit the roundabout from the wrong lane and clipped the back of my Ferrari. I notified my insurer that day - even during that conversation they said it would probably be 50/50 since she would likely claim I was the one that tried to change lane. I stated that I had dashcam proof that was not the case - they said that would help.

In that instance, she admitted full liability so I didn't need the footage - but it convinced me it's a good idea. And parking mode is handy too because people are just not careful enough.

Having said that - if I ever get stopped for speeding, it's likely my own dashcam will send me to prison.....

Haha! Yes, it depends whether you think the balance of the times it will help you will offset the times it will damn you. So I guess that depends on your driving...

Surely you can hard delete your footage?
Although this might be difficult if you are upside down somewhere....

My understanding was that consumer dash cams cannot be used for proof of speeding as they are not properly calibrated?

Urban myth or fact?

I would guess if it was the difference between low 40's in a 40 limit, probably not but say 60 in a 40, that's wiiiide gap

Am not an expert, but I think the footage is your own property, so no-one else can see it unless you give them permission.

Maybe with a warrant they can,. but it may have been deleted by then.....

Law firm Bennet’s say this

Can the police seize the footage from my dash-cam / helmet camera?

Yes, there are occasions when the police can seize a dash-cam or a helmet cam. This would most likely take place when dangerous driving has taken place, or there’s a fatality, and it might not necessarily be seized at the roadside.

I think turning the gps off helps save battery life.

It does however mean your speed is not recorded and device will work only as a camera.

The footage and simple maths allows people to work out speed. Simply how long did it take to pass two points a known distance apart

I’ve decide to go ahead. Not until I’ve got the car. But I have a fitter who just did the same system in a 911.

I think peace of mind it will bring when parking in public and on the road is worth it smile

Don’t bank on it. I had dash cam with parking mode and rear camera. Bus hit the offside rear all I got on the camera was a horrible crunching noise.

Ahh sorry to hear that mate. What camera did you have?

I am investing in the best there is as far as I can find (Blackvue) It has an app that records video at all times with collision reports)

Will it be 100000%, who knows, but I don't know, I would feel better with it I am feeling.

It wasnt quite as high end as Blackvue, it was a Nextbase 622 with rear camera etc. Its also app controlled and has intelligent parking monitoring. T\he issue was field of view , rear quarter wasn't covered.

So IMO I am on the fence with dashcams, they are not a panacea and potentially self incriminating, but there is no doubt they have also helped people out eg the famous one where a scroat was identified keying an Aston

That’s disgusting

What a jealous, sad sad man.

He got a £750 fine and was only ordered to pay £500 to the victim. For a 9k paint job.

Wont be taking mine to the supermarket, that’s for sure.
