I was walking down a dual carriageway earlier today and a 458 Italia went past at a sensible speed as it was actually a 40 mph speed limit.
I dont suppose he was gunning it but i have to say it was quite quiet and disappointing.
Certainly not as loud or aggressive as my Performante or scud
I know its not a track special but I certainly would want to make it louder from what i heard today.
Whilst I was very impressed with F8 tributo overall I think the sound on that was the biggest disappointment but then I am used to my 430 Scuderia.
Combo of turbocharging and GPFs are killing the sound experience

This is due to the valves being closed. With them closed it makes a volume akin to a Ford Mondeo. A valve controller will let the engine whail at 40mph.I dont suppose he was gunning it but i have to say it was quite quiet and disappointing.

Of course good point I guess he wasn't revving hard enough to open valves.I was eagerly anticipating a bark but maybe he changed gear earlier than the open range.
A valve controller seems a sensible solution if you only want to improve noise at low down speeds which is what I tend to like.
Not so bothered at noise at 80 mph as valves will presumably be open anyway

It also works very well the other way. A long stretch on a motorway can be very tiresome with a droning after-market exhuast. Being able to shut the valves at all speeds is as big a feature as being able to open them. Not so bothered at noise at 80 mph as valves will presumably be open anyway
Turbo cars are quieter and the sound is often disappointing. Some of my essential criteria for a sports car is looks & sound. A BMW i8 satisfied the looks part but the sound???? One reason why I moved from Porsche to Ferrari. In my opinion (& it is all subjective), the F430 sounds the best when in full flight. A 360 is also great, but different. 458 onwards is most disappointing, though I know that replacement exhausts can improve the sound. However, non OED items can invalidate a warranty.

I've never found my 458 in race mode beyond 4k revs to sound disappointing, even with the standard exhaust.
Valves are a compromise between sedate motorway cruising or trying to fade into the background around town in auto mode(closed), to lively under hard acceleration (open).
Even in closed mode the sound is unmistakably Ferrari, and sounds quite a bit louder outside than inside. For the most part I found the balance between closed and open satisfactory, although in my experience you did either need to be in Race mode and/or changing gear manually for the valves to stay open at lower speeds.Valves are a compromise between sedate motorway cruising or trying to fade into the background around town in auto mode(closed), to lively under hard acceleration (open).
