Thoughts on these 458 Spiders?......
Discussion
So I'm thinking the 458 might be the safest place to have my pension fund (vs 570s, Huracan, R8 V10+) and so started to look at what is out there. I love convertibles and starting to think it might be worthwhile pushing the budget up a bit.
I've seen these two. The £139k car, I love it, perfect spec, love the cream interior, its also got the carbon seats, dash etc. Also cruise and lift.

Then there is this car. It's got the carbon seats, so a big plus there. But lacks the carbon interior parts. Description is a bit rubbish. But it is quite a lot cheaper and closer to my budget. 7,500 more miles on it.

Any thoughts or opinions? If the £139k one would drop to £130k I'd be on the phone putting a deposit down! But I think that's unlikely. Is it worth the extra? Depreciation is a top priority. I expect to lose some but need to give myself the best chance of minimising that.

First one is the nicer car, imho and does have a better spec. Seems like decent value to me at £139k but whatever you buy will immediately lose the dealer margin and will depreciate a bit in any case.
If depreciation is your top priority then you already have an eye on re-sale and I also reckon the first car would be easier to sell. Depends on how many miles you put on it.
You’ll most likely get a better return on your £139k in an actual pension fund, but you can’t drive a pension!

Recently, like last month, a 13 reg spider with similar spec to the more expensive car and 27k miles was sold at £122.950 or less depending on the negotiated deal so bear that in mind. It was from a McLaren dealer and taken in for a 720s Spider.
I still believe a £80k 'ish 570s would be the better bet, more modern better to drive and probably less potential depreciation over 2-3 years.

Except in my other thread it's being suggested that a 570s will lose £25k over 2 years! A £55k 570s?! Is that really likely?
The second 458 at £128k for sale at Kahn is an absolute bargain and the one i'd buy..Its got the right seats and wheels..The most important inside carbon part is the steering wheel which its got..Taffy66 said:

I was sorely disappointed with the drive of a 458 Spider when I took one out - as soon as I dropped the roof, the scuttle shake and vibration through the steering wheel was awful on anything other than a glass smooth road (and how many of those do we have ?!). It was so bad that I cut the test drive short, decided I was not going to buy a spider, and bought an Italia about 2 weeks later.

I concur on the scuttle shake. I really wanted a 458 spider having owned two Italia’s, but extended test drive told me an absolute no go and too much of a compromise for UK roads. Funnily enough the 488 Spider is infinitely better and improved in this department. For me, buying a 458 defiantly go hard top, 488 go Spider.
I’ve got an Italia and it’s awesome.
I never realised the Spiders had so much scuttle shake and I guess it is maybe why good spec Italia are holding firm price wise whereas Spider values seem to be dropping?
A 570S Spider can be had for 90k now maybe in 2-3yr they might be 70k but not sure how much more depreciation McLaren can take I know they have their issues but they are starting to look more appealing as prices keep crashing to the point they may become supercar used bargains soon.

It’s definitely the case that the spider is a bit wobbly by modern standards but the design is over 10 years old now and it is what it is.
Still a proper event to drive with the roof down as that V8 is a masterpiece and you can always leave the roof up and drop the rear window. The noise is such a big part of the experience imho that you can forgive the lack of rigidity.
Horses for courses in the end and if you want pin sharp handling and a shake free trip, get a MClaren but most of them sound deadly dull imho.
As others have said, have a drive and decide what you want. Spider not the sharpest tool in the driving box but overall as a roof down experience, really hard to beat imho.

Any views on this black Spider from Stratstones?

Looks good to me. Seats, wheels, a bit of carbon. Ticks the boxes. Looks great in black. Two year warranty (with a few exclusions)
I bough mine last July from them and they were first class to deal with. I paid about what they are asking for that one but mine has slightly more miles and a bit more carbon but otherwise quite similar.

I have a spider. It wobbles and shakes a lot. But if you drive it like you stole it the handling and 'slide ability' are superb. To dismiss the 458 because of its skuttle shake is to deny yourself a really superb ride. The whole experience on a dry with the sun shining, no matter how cold, is epic. Watch this video and tell me I'm wrong. https://youtu.be/_NGpDmWNqh4
