Buying: 458 Spider v F430 F1 Spider
Discussion
Probably discussed a few times in the past, but what are the pros & cons of a newish F430 Spider v one of the original 458 Spiders with low mileage? There seems to be quite a few 458s up for sale now the manufacturer's warranty has stopped. Not many low mileage F430 Spiders.
The 458 Spider is bigger (just a little), more high tech, arguably easier to drive, has the better gearbox & is more expensive. But if money is a factor, which will hold its value more? Will the F430 Spider even appreciate? Will the 458 Spider appreciate? In short, which is the better cost option in the long run.
Finally, now that early 458s are no longer covered by the 7 year manufacturer's warranty and service, should one purchase a Ferrari warranty. Same goes for the F430.

Johnny, I always thought 458s came with a 7 year warranty. How long was it? Moreover. low mileage F430 Spiders are in short supply whereas it seems to me that owners are offloading their older 458s at the end of their free servicing and Ferrari warranty, perhaps to move up to 488 now they are dropping in value.
Ferrari full warranty is 3 years extendable to 5. Thereafter you can purchase a ‘new power’ warranty which covers major parts of the drivetrain until the car is 12 years old. It has a lot of exclusions though so unless you lunch the engine or gearbox, it’s not really worth it.
Regarding the reliability difference between the 430 and 458, the 430 is more fragile but cheaper to fix and independents can work on it all day long. The 458 is more reliable but will cost more when it goes wrong and ideally needs to see a main dealer.
In terms of driving, the 458 is miles more modern (use google as this question has been asked many times)
This is why 458s command a significant premium to the 430.
As to which is a safer bet financially? who knows - but if I was a betting man, I’d say that depreciation for both will be about the same. So buy the one you like and can afford.
Be sure, though, that if you buy a low mileage version of either and then drive it as its maker intended, you’ll lose money on both...

I think you can extend it to 15 years nowadays - cost from memory is c. 4k Euros p.a..
I have a warranty on my 430 and my FF for peace of mind. FF already had gearbox work twice, 430 so far nothing (knock on wood). I will likely extend it every year as I really don't fancy paying for a new engine/engine rebuild - I do drive the cars though, so mileage will eventually exceed 100k km
I personally think the 458 looks much better than the 430, but prefer the F1 gearbox to DCT. I think both will depreciate - there are (imo) just too many cars in that price bracket

Thanks. Interesting that you prefer the F1 gearbox to DCT. I find it incredibly difficult reversing out of my tight garage in the F1 as it is difficult to modulate the speed. At the risk of being flamed, I think the F430 will depreciate less than the 458 simply because it has probably found the bottom and has been fairly steady for a number of years and I don't believe the prices of them went crazy like various other models during the recent supercar price rise madness.
The 458 has held very strong at current prices but I think if prices do go down across the board which the current climate suggests it will, the 458 may have further to fall than the 430.
