Anyone know this 458 Spider?
Discussion
Hi there,
I’m looking for a 458 Spider and undecided between Rosso Corsa or GS... looking at this one at the moment:
https://www.pistonheads.com/classifieds/used-cars/...
I know the RC is not to everyone’s taste but it is my first Ferrari and maybe my last so part of me feels like it has to be red just like my posters of the 80/90’s, but I also think that the 458 looks so understated and classy in grey and it really works with the lines.
Anyway, I drove that RC one at MM on the weekend, it seems like a grey car but the only thing is that they’ve had it since October, which, given it’s in resale red with all the right options(?) it seems odd that it’s sat so long? Maybe not for a 458 but can’t help thinking great cars in that spec at a main dealer wouldn’t hang around - the sales guy even said today in that spec they usually fly out.
If someone knows the car or can enlighten me that would be much appreciated.
Many thanks!

I’ve been watching those MM cars too and have had a conversation with them about buying. There’s nothing wrong with them other than they are over-priced in my view (and seemingly most buyers views too) and that’s why they are still there.
As you say, they have had the red and grey cars for months but I found them pretty inflexible on pricing and the trade they offered me for a 997 was laughable. It’s a slow market and that’s why they are sticking around at those prices. Imho.

They've actually had it for sale since March last year. Initially at £189,995 then reduced incrementally to the current £174,995. That's probably also why the mot expired in Jan 2018. I think 5 owners (not unusual). I don't know of any issues with it and it looks a good spec with the sports seats.

Thanks for the replies guys, especially this. I must admit I wasn’t overly impressed with the standard of prep - it was looking a bit tatty in places but mostly cosmetic, which makes sense if they’ve had it over a year because it’s probably had more people in and out of it than it has done cleans! It still seems very overpriced though, as do the other 458’s at MM, which is why they’re probably sitting on them.
Thanks all! May the search continue then...

Without knowing much detail, this seems cheap for a 2014 car compared to other 13/14 cars. Looks like the mileage is 23khttps://preowned.ferrari.com/en/search

Yes it is 23k, he’s never been mileage sensitive when it comes buying as he does very little miles, he probably won’t put more than 2k in the coming year he also has a gallardo that’s coming up to 40k miles.
From what he’s said it’s been very well prepped.

That seems exceptionally cheap - I think the cheapest Spider in the country is still £149k with 27k on the clock and that’s the black one at Lamborghini Sevenoaks which I have seen and is absolutely hanging.https://preowned.ferrari.com/en/search

Sounds like your brother got a silly deal given that will also have a Ferrari warranty! I hope he’s enjoying it!

I suspect they're running otut of margin if they've had it that long and reduced it £15k., By the time they prep it, put 2 years warranty on it, allow for funding costs and Vat on any profit there won't a whole lot left if they discount itWhilst that's true, different cars will need a different amount of prep. This might have needed next to nothing, other cars might need more than the average. It's a simple numbers game. Also, can't speak for every dealer, but I've seen cars with for e.g. tyres that really ought to be changed but they're deemed good enough to leave on the car.
When I was looking at F430 Spiders a few years ago the conversation of clutch wear came up, as it would, and one car had 60% wear. The dealer talked down the need to replace it, and said that they wouldn't even consider it until it was ~80%, but I'd bet money on it being a completely different conversation with the previous owner trying to chop it in to them, even if the clutch performed perfectly well. Perhaps they chipped him/her down suggesting that they would need to replace it as part of the prep....
There's also a memorable thread on here where a guy was looking to buy a 458 privately, engaged a main dealer to give it an inspection, who came back with a laundry list of things they said it needed doing. The guy was sufficiently disincentivised not to buy it, and surprise surprise the dealer swooped in to buy it from the private seller, and I imagine those "essential fixes" suddenly became less important.
Obviously dealers need to make money, and the procurement guys who get the biggest margin spreads are obviously going to be rewarded, but I don't think any of them are falling on hard times here.
