Currently have the former as a weekend toy along with a GT8 Aston. Have owned from new.
As with a number of other recent Porsche owners looking to make the jump.
Some basic questions if I may of the more experienced F owners.
1) Keeping on a battery conditioner driving a couple of thousand miles per year - is this going to present issues ?- absolutely none on the Porsche.
2) Are the earliest 458 ‘s considered not a problem v the later ones - I read of updates etc so are any “ vital “ ?
3) Running one without warranty ? Stupid or are there any in particular that need thought ?
4) I sense that many people recommend buying from a main dealer for their first ?
Appreciate any wise thoughts !

Hi there

I drove 4 cars, couple before 2012 and a couple post 2012, so got a good idea.

1. Cannot answer this, but the car has a relatively normal AGM battery, so can't see any issues.
2. Pre 2012 cars have more brutal shifts in race mode, post 2012 cars have inertia shift, so more brutal in normal driving, but smoother when on it and a touch faster, but near impossible to tell, supposedly after 2012 gearbox was more reliable, but power warranty covers this. Pre 2012 cars sound better due to engine map with pops and gurgles on over run. Post 2012 cars ride a little better in bumpy road mode and are supposedly better handling at limits.
3. Buy official, comes with 2yr power warranty, will cover any major issues like engine/gearbox/drive train, won't cover stuff like dampers which are £3000 a pair.
4. Yes, as above for warranty.

They are selling fast, out of cars I've being watching last few weeks, three had sold, plus the one I've purchased that makes 4, last NA Ferrari and all that.

I have a 2010 458. I have had gearbox problems but they were covered under power warranty. I have been thinking about chopping it in and getting a GT3, a car I also love, but have decided not to because actually the 458 is more robust than 991.1 GT3's (all 991.1 GT3 engines will fail at some stage - see the v useful thread here https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&... and it just has that little edge (not much) over the GT3 in wow and thrill factor. Just my opinion. I have an Atom 4 on order so that will have to do for extra thrills.

On leaving it on a trickle charger, I took mine out after 4 months on a trickle charger on Sunday. It didn't miss a beat.

Cheers both for quick replies and useful inf.
Gibbo , did many you looked at have your alcantara seats in ? - I confess to having a slight fetish for them - and in your new beast they look fantastic.

No most buckets were full leather, still look nice but the alcantara certainly have an edge in both comfort and looks.

The black car in Stratstone Wilmslow had them and larger horses, that was a real nice car, it drove very well, it also felt faster than most of the other 458's I drove and it handled the best. It had the lightest forged wheel option with titanium nuts, the only negative of the car was it made a smell which they put down to it not being driven for 2-3 months, so maybe some truth but no other cars made a smell. But it has Ferrari warranty and Ferrari dealershoip and it was a very good looking car just a shame it did not have some extra carbon inside.
