I see from the ads that its now possible to get into a 488 spider for under £200k. I am the owner of a low mileage 458 spider with a great spec, I've been monitoring prices all summer with a view to changing to a 488 spider when they go under £200k, should I hold on to the 458 or go for the 488? Cannot my mind up due to the large drop in prices over the last 6 months on the 488, is it a bad move?

Its all very well saying the 488 Spider has now gone under £ 200 000 but what has happened to the 458 spider prices & your cost to change which is surely the more relevant than any notional price level for just one part of the deal

I rented a 488 spider for a week. Fast, comfortable, good ergonomics but it left me cold... Didn't like the power delivery, I found it quite hard to drive fast on the twisties because the TC was so evasive; in-fact during my last Europe tour when I was in my 599 I was consistently pulling away from my buddy in his 488. Plus the exhaust note was muted and uninteresting. If I were you I'd keep the 458 no matter the cost to change.

If you’ve been looking for 6 months I assume you’ve already test driven and decided you prefer the 488? I was unsure if I wanted to swap, but after spending a day in the newer car both myself and my wife far preferred it to my previous 458’s and I honestly think it’s at least 10-20% better in all areas. I seem to be one of the few 458 owners who did/do not think the n/a engine was that thrilling to listen to, although I loved the throttle response.

Re the car under £200k, I looked at that earlier in the month. Although it looks nice in the pics, it’s colour combo is unusual. Those seats are also a tight fit on leg and head room for anyone close to 6 foot. What you might save on purchase, you’ll probably miss out on when selling on (if that bothers you). If it does, buy a carbon seated rosso nero interior car and pay a little more given this is what dealers prefer to stock.
Nobody on this forum knows what’s going to happen to prices, but with Ferrari pricing increasing on 488 replacement imo 488’s will continue to hold a premium over the 458. The new spider is likely to be almost 2 years away from reaching us and I would assume a well speced car will be well over £300k (my 488 spider spec was £268k).

I would say now is a good time. Middle of winter while the dealers are trying to shift some stock, you can probably negotiate a good deal. The 458 will lose as much as the 488 if not more because there are loads of 458's for sale.

I disagree with the above comments, I drove both cars and spent the extra money on the 488, it's just a much better car all round in my view. You can't really fully appreciate it until you drive it on a track, its head and shoulders better than the 458.

Only had my 488 Spider for about a month so no real comments yet on how it drives compared to others yet. I do agree however that winter is usually the time of best deals in the market, and this winter more than most as there seems to be some stuff sticking around given the environment, so no harm in making bids at the moment - whether they get accepted or not will be down to how much the dealer wants (or needs) to sell but worth a go perhaps?

Fwiw, being fortunate enough to have a 458 spider and a 488 gtb for me I prefer the 458 tbh based primarily on the sound compared to the rather muted 488, saying that the 488 is a very fast and capable car albeit a little to fast for uk roads. Also, when I ordered a huracan performante spider I tried to px the 488 against it and the bids I was getting were awful to say the least, almost 63k less than I paid less than a year ago prior !! Did not expect that ! So I'm hanging onto it for now until prices stabilise ( hopefully) The 458 however I think will gain strength financially over time being last of the n.a. engines and what a lovely sound to.

I’m looking at a 458 and found this video a helpful comparison against the 488

I considered buying a 488 but eventually bought a 458 Italia instead..I found a sensibly priced example two weeks ago which was about £50k less than the cheapest 488 which swung it for me..I'm expecting delivery in the next couple of days and look forward to compare it to 991.2GT3 and 981 Spyder..
As you say the allure of the last Nasp 9k revving Pininfarina designed Ferrari was irresistable. After all 570 HP can't be safely used on UK roads let alone another 100 on top.

I think the 488 has to be a lot better to justify the price differential. I decided to stay with my 458 (non Spider, and also put my name down for an Atom 4) because, while the 488 is undoubtedly a much, much better track car, it isn't necessarily a much, much better road car. I prefer the n/a sound and rev range, although I prefer the 488 steering but this is an individual preference. Also, in my view, the 488 is so stonkingly rapid that it actually reduces common and garden road driving enjoyment - you can travel at mere 458 speeds but it means holding back and in any event you can't deploy the 488 to anything like its full potential without taking serious risk. That being said, there is no "wrong" here and I'd say any "advantages" the 458 Spider has versus the 488 Spider are smaller. Good luck with your fortunate choice.

I look forward to your impressions of the 458 compared to the 991.2 GT3.

As you may know I’ve got my 488 GTB being delivered to me in the next 2 weeks and I will do the same comparing it to my now gone GT3 Touring.

The initial test drive has already got me excited but a longer drive on faster A and B roads will give me a better u derstanding of what I have changed for.

The 488 will make the Touring feel like its going backwards whilst i expect the 458 Italia and my 991.2GT3 PDK to have very similar performance(in a straight line at least)

No doubt it will. But I'm looking to hear more about the involvement and characteristics of the car/engine, basically which one is more fun. I care very little for straight line speed on the road.

In which case the 458 makes more sense than the 488..I might upgrade my 458 to a 488 later in the year depending how my 458 performs compared to my GT3..
