I am looking to buy a Ferrari 430 with a manual gearbox and have discovered that the one I am looking at has had 11 owners. It is at the cheaper end of the market, but the high number of owners is putting me off. It had 9 owners in the first 6 years, and has been well maintained by the last 2 owners who have kept it over the last 6 years, so isn't necessarily a 'problem car'. I realise that cars of this type are 'aspirational', and as a result quite often have a higher turnover of ownership. However, 11 owners seems excessive so I was wondering what other people's opinions of it are because I am trying to gauge how difficult it might be for me to sell it in the future.

Thank you in advance,

Danny.

11 is my lucky number but it does mean 11 people never loved it enough to keep it!

Several lines of thought for a prospective buyer
1 it had issues that each owner got rid quick, and the cycle kept going.
2, last two owners sorted this out
3. Issues never occured and was bought run for 6 months and offloaded in the autumn. This happens a lot and some cars gain a large amount of owners through no fault of the car.

Some buyers will be obsessed in a low owner car but its not necessarily an issue in these typos.

My take is that where its bought/sold often work generally gets done ready for the next buyer.

Above all buy on condition get a ppi if needed.

Is it a keeper? If so as above, buy on condition and have an inspection done. If realistically you are going to sell it on at some point then potential buyers will have the same concerns that you have now. Understand that manuals are not that easy to come across, but there will be others. If in doubt move on. Cheers.

The price dictates all.

Ultimately, this particular statistic is extremely undesirable.

I couldn't even tell you how many owners any of my cars have had - I'm not sure anybody has ever asked when I've sold one either.

Once a car has gone past 3/4 owners I really don't think it matters.

Condition & maintenance is all that's important in my opinion.

Thank you all for your responses. There is some good advice amongst them and many of the comments echo my own thoughts. I anticipate that I would only keep the car for a couple of years therefore potential problems with future resale are my main concern. I made an informal offer on the car, subject to it undergoing an independent inspection, and the dealer stated that he may be able to meet me halfway. However, in light of the high number of previous owners I am inclined to stick to my guns and not proceed any further unless the dealer will accept what I originally proposed. If it doesn’t work out I will look at paying more money for a car that better fits my requirements or may even look at ones with the F1 gearbox.

Is it a silver one, just out of interest?

I would say like many other have, buy on condition, mileage, price. I bought my E46 M3 when it was 5 years old, had 5 owners, i do still have the car, so not so worried, but i dont even remember it bothering me at the time of purchase.

As this F430 is a Manual i suspect in time to come (and they are already thin on supply) you'll not be too fussed. Neither will a proposed buyer who 'really wants a manual' car supply will only get worse, and as long as its in good condition, has moderate mileage etc and has good service record, i doubt you'll struggle to sell it.

My 924S has had 9 owners, and to be fair i'm not bothered it was in better condition than a 3 owner car i looked at.

My 348 has had 4 owners, but i wouldn't have discounted it for having 8/9/10 as its mint, and there are not exactly 150 for sale to go view!

what colour? RHD/LHD?

This, and you can even it out over time.

My 360 had 6 owners when I bought it in 2013. 5 years later, with my regular servicing I feel it is already starting to even out. Ferraris are no for everyone, so it’s understandable to get the odd one with 9 owners...

Ferraris can have a lot of owners when people buy their aspirational car and then decide 12 months later its not for them.

11 is a lot of owners and shows no one has fallen in love with it for one reason or another. It may not be a bad thing but it certainly doesn't help resale.
At the same time good manuals are hard to find so if the rest of the car, condition and history are spot on then the number of owners is less important

It will affect the value slightly, but then again it's all proportional. If you buy it cheaper because of the high number of owners, you sell it cheaper because of the number of owners. Your loss or gain will be the same, it just may take longer to sell as it will not be the most desirable car on the market.

Wouldnt be concerned as long as it had a good ppi and it had a full service history with recognised specialists, especially for the last few owners.

Gonna hazard a guess - Its black and Sabia leather.

If so, I used to own it - think I was the 10th... (sold it at the lows!!!!)

The car was bullet proof - I changed the dash to carbon, as it used to have the alloy facia. Spent a bit on it - but it never, ever let me down.

if it is the same car - drop me a pm , and I will give you the lowdown...

Nope - it wasn't... Still, as discussed with Danny, wouldnt let the ownership number get in the way. PPI definitely though!

Also, quite a few people buy a Ferrari that has just had a major service, run it for a couple of years and then sell it just before the next major service is due because they can't really afford it.

I made the mistake of buying a F430 Spider, 7 years old, with only 1000 miles on the clock. It needed quite a lot of work. Cars need to be driven. Moreover, if the previous sales were through a Ferrari dealership then each time the car is put back to perfection! My present one is 11 years old and 13K miles. Perfection.

On another note, I wonder where F430 Spider values are going... up or down?
