I have a friend who is an insurance fraud engineer, he says the industry is constantly faced with individuals buying salvage then holding it for six months having insured it to then park it in a ditch and make a claim for repairs. Effectively they get the insurer to put the salvage they bought back on the road. So effectively they buy a 30-50k piece of salvage and get it rebuilt for nowt. Generally they also are found to be involved with the repairer or are the repairer. Insurance companies can’t force you to use their own repairers, they can only take away certain benefits if you insist going elsewhere, such as a loan car!The only downfall is when asked for the receipts for all the parts they generally can’t provide them, what a surprise! I’m sure the police double triple checked all the details before squashing the car! Even a cat car will still have a value well above what it cost to put back on the road using this method!
