Private Plates
Discussion
Hi all,
With the imminent arrival of my new car I am looking at private plates. I have never had one before. I assume DVLA is the best place to look? or are there better places. I am not going to spend a fortune but just want something different to the regular new car plate. The Mrs does not want me to have anything with "Rocky" in it which is my nickname so were going to have to look for something with a little more common ground. Probably gambling or Vegas related as this is our common past time.
Have any of you got private plates? any interesting ones? I just saw P16 COP is available, I bet you would get pulled every outing with that one

I was asked if I wanted to bid for P1 STA (by the firm who in fairness got there first) for my incoming PISTA. They said the starting bid was 20,000 pounds. Search variations here http://dvlaregistrations.direct.gov.uk/

Considering a unique paint job for the car (which I am) is one thing. Paying north of 20K in a blind bid for the plate is daft. I bought something off the DVLA site ending in STA for 499 quid. Not close to P1 STA but I'll live with it.

I have F1 RNA (£1200 DVLA) on my 458 Spider and F12 RNA (£600 DVLA) on my F12 as well as six Rx or Rxx RNA plates on other cars, all DVLA and all £00-£400. I stupidly hesitated to buy F2 RNA at £600 and missed out. Doh. Obviously RNA are my initials.
I wouldn't pay loads for a plate but they seemed bargains to me. DVLA do an automated email thingy to let you know of upcoming auctions too which might help you?

brought a plate off dvla years ago V2 UPU ( 2 fingers in a vee sign) only had it on a car once its too brash and my be considered rude, since then the DVLA has stopped selling UPU plates
That's reminded me of a story I was told about the BF6050 plate on my 1930 Model A. I imported it from New Zealand and have since been told that many vintage cars that are imported/re registered get BF plates because no one wanted them back in the day as BF, much like WTF or LOL now, was an acronym for 'Bloody Fool' and people used to say, "He's a right BF".No idea if it's true?
Some years ago just prior to collecting my 355 from the seller I discovered that DVLA were about to auction A1 FER which I thought would be ideal.
If I remember correctly it had a reserve or indicated price of £1200 so I submitted an online bid of £1900. Unfortunately I wasn't near a phone on auction day but eventually received a text to say I'd been unsuccessful.
I wasn't too disappointed but on checking later I was advised that it went for £2000, and as the bids had to increase in increments of £100 I was really hacked off.
However after reflection I realised it was a good thing that I hadn't been around as a bidding war might have had disastrous consequences !

Does anyone know if you’re able to approach the DVLA to ask them to release a particular plate that hasn’t yet been issued? How would I go about this?
http://dvlaregistrations.direct.gov.uk/contactus/I think there is quite a long waiting list - I've waited a year for a registration to go to Auction.
You can telephone DVLA and they will check up to three registrations on one call. Or you can message from the website link below.
I was initially advised it could take a year to reach auction for a plate I am interested in, but that was 18 months ago. They are now saying it could take up to 3 years in total so not long to wait now!
They say they will contact you when a plate you have enquired about is going to auction but you can also go on the mailing list for the auctions and keep an eye out yourself. I keep in contact every few months via the website.
I’ve previously bought from auction using the telephone service. You need to preregister and they call you a few minutes before your plate comes up.
The alternatives are bidding online or turning up in person, but you do need to preregister in all cases.
If using the telephone service make sure you preregister early enough so that you secure a line and a bidder and then make sure you are not on another call when they call you back!

I have a few including SCU1 for my Scuderia and F550BAR for my Barchetta. What I do advise is IGNORE the big website asking price. I always offer about 50% and although I don’t always win, they are more desperate for buyers for their plates and I usually get them at c65% of asking. Just call, listen, offer and tell them to call you back when they are ready. Also make sure you know the full price before you offer. Some have VAT to add and that can be a bugger if you negotiate a price then whoops here is additional 20%!! Happy hunting.
