Might have done something a little odd/backwards 458 to 430
Discussion
Might sound a bit odd, been lucky to have a 2010 458 for almost 2 years, but decided to go 'backwards' to a 430 SCUD
Part of my rationale was that are 458's going down in value now including specials and would a good priced 430 RHD SCUD at £40k more be a better 3+Year investment and fun drive....will post some picts next week when pick up

Funny enough, I've got a 458 and have been also looking at scuds. Certainly I agreed that they look reasonable value at the moment compared to 'other' stuff which has gone banana's, but still buying at a huge premium to 3 years ago. Thing is, having noticed such a leap when moving from F1430 to 458, I think I might struggle. Plus my wife much prefers the 458, so an easy life and all that. Mind, I do think for that one special day a year or track outing the Scud would take some beating. If I had the garage space and didn't have to justify it to my wife I would certainly look to add it to the collection! The Speciale do seem to be levelling off @£290k. If they drop a further £40k I'd certainly be looking to buy so will hang on for the moment and see. Speaking to dealer, their 458's are selling at a premium of c£5-10k over 12 months ago, so surprised to hear that you think prices are falling? I do know that I certainly wouldn't want to blow an extra £60k on a 488. It'll be interesting to see where all these prices go over next 12-24 months, but I can't see much of a drop off whilst interest rates likely to remain low in U.K. for next 4-5 years. Think I'll sit on the fence and see what happens.
Looking forward to seeing pics of you car and hearing your thoughts on the epic gearbox........

Sometimes you have to go back to go forwards.
The 430 Scuderia is an awesome car with that epic F1 superfast II gearbox. Really miss mine but the Mrs really didn't like the stripped out racer style.
Rather have my money in a limited number Scud than a regular 458 when the big price correction on Ferrari comes.
And its coming

Yes you might be right about price falls.....but then again you might well be wrong also! We'll see.The 430 Scuderia is an awesome car with that epic F1 superfast II gearbox. Really miss mine but the Mrs really didn't like the stripped out racer style.

I can't help think it really matters that much if standard 458's, 650s, Huracan drop £20-30k. I mean that should really be expected. Isn't that what these types of cars should do? Personally, I've lost over £100k in combined depreciation on new daily driver M's and AMG's over 6 years, as I expected I would (and probably will continue to do!) I would rather this did not happen, but that's unrealistic and I knew what I was getting into.
However, personally, I don't think prophesizing on the fall of Ferrari prices in particular has any basis. Simple supply and demand has put the prices where they are. There really is no sinister Ferrari dealer master plan to artificially fix prices and I don't really think standard 458's have been driven upwards by investors?
Of course, eventually, you will be proven correct on prices (6months, 2 years, 5 years?) I remember a particular fund manager who used to visit me year in year out, telling me that one specific asset class was about to go through the roof. I had to laugh 7 years later when he eventually was proven right, just shame about the previous 6 years of crying wolf.
Prices will go up and will come down, markets fluctuate. If this is an issue don't bother buying a supercar as you'll be too chewed up to enjoy it. My profession is investing money. Rightly or wrongly I wouldn't invest in cars as I deem them too high risk, but will continue to buy them to enjoy with the expectation of depreciation. Surely everybody else should expect the same?
who knows what will happen in the world and prices ! the 458 is an amazing car for sure ! when i drove it felt even more special than the 430 scud, but after 1.5 years of very enjoyable ownership have decided to invest a little more but go backwards?! to the scud as i think the limited numbers and harder interior, feel of the car is so enjoyable im going to give it a go again for a couple of years, if anything else is to go by for example the uplift in stradale prices (wish i had not sold that one 8 years ago !) then maybe this one will be a long term keeper and enjoy and investment....agreed the mrs wont like the interior as much as the 458 though ! its strange and interesting how the speciales have come down from upper £300's to lower £200's but i remember that with scud and stradale once the new model comes out and then after 5-8 years they go up again, so maybe the time to buy a speciale ! i wish ! but maybe the time to put in a deposit on the 488 lightweight edition too.....! they always get a premium when they come out....if only i had a couple of million to play with car investing.....may be not ! would be quite scary too ! delivery on wednesday, will keep you posted !
Buy the car you want to experience and enjoy. Don't be controlled by values and residuals. The point of money is to liberate you, not imprison you.
In fact, I would say if you can't afford the prospect of losing every penny that you have tied up in cars then don't own them in the first place, stick to a ford focus instead.

There is a world of difference Shazbat, between being able to afford the loss and not bothering about the loss. And that difference depends most of all on whether you can replace the money from a well paid job or business or like me are retired and buying out of savings you cant replace. Writing off the 430 wouldnt in any way alter my lifestyle or plans but the loss of near 100k would upset me all the same.
That said I was talking to a long term owner at a recent FOC meeting. I cant remember which model he was talking about but he described a situation in which he bought new for a bit above 100k something like 20 years ago, the car depreciated to 50k before bouncing back up again to near 100k in the previous classic car bubble. Afterwards in the 2009 crash it dropped to something around 50/60 k only now to have bounced well back towards the 100 again. Given how F car prices stand against similarly upmarket brands like Aston or Porker, it seems possible that the current F car price levels are a bubble but if they collapse I shall simply wait for the next bubble to come along.
I have to agree with Gary M3M5 - cars are never an investment. At best they are a gamble. Usu7ally a losing one.

It's Winter - I was eying up 458s over the past 3 years and they always dropped during the winter but come spring they sprung up in price and have constantly risen over the years. Yes they are regular cars and not special editions but then so were the 360s and F430s and they are still holding their value very well. Let's not forget the last of the naturally aspirated engine stuff too - IMHO over the years the only way is up for the 458.
Enjoy the scud
Enjoy the scud
I've got to say I was a little underwhelmed with Scud ownership furthermore the upgrade from Scud to 458 was a revelation. For anything other than investment I wouldn't go backward unless I intended to lock it up in a garage and put no miles on it.
The 458 does everything better and in my mind is a better looking car although I appreciate the latter is purely my opinion.
As previously stated I'd only consider these cars as a source of pleasure and not investment and for those on here that snipe about the value falling out of the Ferrari marque I'd take little notice, they often have an axe to grind.

The ferrari design work for all its history, for me, have there own special piece of design in every car model they have produced and that's what makes them great, 348, 360, 458, 430 all my top ferrari cars but basically for different reasons all great all the models and more to come im sure. The 458 is a remarkable, really remarkable car, but ive had it a few years and fancied a return as i had a scud in 2008 time, its a beautiful car to look at and im my view more amazing to drive and for me that much improved from the 430 (perhaps not to justify twice the price) but its great, im certainly going to enjoy regardless of the pricing in the future as i think (who knows) this one could be a longer term keeper for me (i usually keep cars 1.5-2year) so we shall see, enjoy and hope to see you all around - hope these photos post up ok !
I must admit I preferred my 430 Scuderia to a 458 purely as a drivers car ( as I'm sure I would of 458 speciale to 430 Scuderia ) but I then became so concerned/frightened about its value if I added too many miles it became easier to take out other cars.
In hindsight my advice would be don't worry about the mileage just drive it as it will always be worth "good" money as a limited edition car and you are better off extracting more enjoyment out of it.
I see my cars as purely a thing of pleasure and have other investments ( boring houses, stocks and shares and pensions ) so for me the 2 things should never cross paths.
I buy the best car on the market at the time for me and my circumstances to drive and enjoy and sod the cost - at the moment that happens to be the McLaren 650S spider.
Good luck with the Scuderia this week and drive it like you stole it. Lifes too short

im not sure about the stripe, apparently they put it on to create more interest and help differentiate the scud from the 430 (which im not sure it did as they were thinking of now removing it!) but as its not factory finish and its not that great close up im thinking of removing it, they did off FOC but decided to see how i feel about it and possibly let a detailer remove and polish etc at same time.....then im thinking of getting front end paintshield protected as i remember the paintwork being much more susceptable to stone chips than the 458 (paint tech improvements?)

I do agree that the 458 is better looking than the 430 but I see things a bit differently. I have not driven a 458 but test drove the 488. To me it was too fast and too refined at the same time. For me "better" is to be more raw and connected to the car and that's why I chose the CS. Having driven the Scud though I would definitely have it over later machinery like 458 / 488 and possibly over a speciale too (but I haven't driven one of those yet!)The 458 does everything better and in my mind is a better looking car although I appreciate the latter is purely my opinion.
