360 manual gearboxes
Discussion
A friend of mine has a Ferrari 360 with a manual gearbox but the gearbox has a whine and a crunch into 5th gear and he is trying to find out if all 360 manual gearboxes are the same?
Are those symptoms common on a 360 gearbox that's covered a few miles and is replacing the gearbox with a 2nd hand unit more cost effective than repair?
Thanks

Mine is F1 but no whine and no crunches.
I would be wary of fitting a second hand box unless you could guarantee the quality of it.
It's a lot of labour to pull it out again if it's got a fault.
Personally I'd start by finding a good indie with experience of rebuilding these and have it removed and inspected. My decision what to do next would be based on their advice.
Synchro's are not actually that expensive. It depends what else is wrong.
At least when it's back together it"s a known quantity.

That's been my advice to him so far and I have even suggested changing the oil first because he's only just got the car and we don't know how old the oil is. Sure a replacement box from Ferrari is expensive but repair needn't be. I'll pass this on to him. It's a lot of labour to pull it out again if it's got a fault.

Mine's smooth on all changes, except 1st to 2nd before it's warmed up (is that common? I'm guessing so).
Yes and no. Getting a cold Ferrari into 2nd used to be nigh on impossible, apparently because there was a stronger synchromesh on 2nd requiring the oil to be warmed up and thinned before it would work properly. I read, years ago, that they addressed this from the 355 onwards by including some kind of heating element, but it wouldn't surprise me if this wasn't entirely effective as I've heard that 355s don't like 2nd then they're cold either.Mike Brown said:
I think they all whine a little, they remind me of the old Austin 1100 and minis, whereabouts are you, a good indie would soon ascertain what's up, Mike
Although ours is a F1, I've always believed it to be the same box and ours doesn't whine at all. As said above, find someone in the know and have it diagnosed. The whine may or may not be connected to the crunch.mike01606 said:
Where is he based and if just bought was it a private sale?
He lives in Corby and it was a private sale, the seller was honest enough to make him aware of the whine even though he couldn't hear it at the time. I think it only whines in 1 gear, I haven't been out in it yet.Gassing Station | Ferrari V8 | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
