I picked up my 458 Italia on Friday and fantastic machine but a bit disappointed with the noise!

First off my 430 was a spider and roads were damp so didn't get much above 6k revs. Certainly started to get interesting then and I can imagine upper end is impressive racket.
The disappointment was the lack of pops and bangs on downshifting The 430 you could really hear the f4rty noise going up gears as the valves opened and great bangs in downshift when downshifting at about 4500 revs. But the italia doesn't seem to do much downshifting??

Is that right? do I need to downshift at higher revs or just do the valve disconnects as noted in another thread

I was in race mode btw

Having recently compared f430 coupe to spider, I'd say its unfair on the coupe to make a noise comparison... the spider is sooo much more vivid and orchestral compared to the coupe... maybe thats the issue here ?!

Compare the 430 coupe to 458italia and I suspect its unlikely you'd be so disappointed

Had you or a previous owner disconnected the vacuum lines controlling the tailpipe valves on your F430? That transforms the sound of the F430, particularly when downshifting at around 3500 rpm.

Never driven a 458 but presumably on a standard exhaust with valves connected it will be a bit quieter than the F430.

Just disconnect the valves and the 458 makes all the pops and bangs on the overrun you could ask for....😎

I had a 360 with Tubi and two 430's (the second a Spider) before 458. I would have to say the sound is a little better in the 430, although the Tubi'd 360 was better still). However, it isn't as if the sound is awful in the 458 and otherwise it is leagues ahead, in my opinion anyway, so I don't feel shortchanged.

What year? 2012 (maybe late 2011?) on from what I've been led to believe the exhaust note is different, less pops and bangs.

I was told this too by a Ferrari driver when on a test drive day for the 488 at Millbrook. He said the earlier cars sound much better. I certainly have no complaints at all from mine and that's with the valves still connected - sounds much better than my 430 did.

This seems to be general consensus from other site - software changes 2012 and open valves all time only make existing sounds louder rather than dumping fuel on over runs to get the pops pre software changes

And that would explain why the previous owner told me never to let them update the software smile
