1st Year of Scud Ownership
Discussion
For those who are interested, I thought I would share my experiences, warts and all of my first year of Scud ownership.
I am a long time Petrolhead with a long list of old flames, mostly German and Porsche shaped. I have also spent the last 8 years in Dubai, consciously buying cars with the maximum cylinder count possible.
The Scud came by accident, I was actually looking for a 997 GT3 but for “just a little more” I found I could buy a car which when it was launched I thought something like “Nice, but I will never be able to afford one of them”. I chickened out of the first one I saw thought "Oh Crap what have I done?" and bought the second one that became available 2 weeks later. There are not too many out here and it seemed straight enough - Dubai car from new, some nice documentation and serviced at the local main dealer. I got it checked out at a local independent and had to get a few bits done, including a service and replacement of exhaust studs which meant the engine had to come out. I also had to buy a second key which had me having a complete meltdown at the dealer at the cost of the bloody thing. Most expensive bit of shiny red plastic I have ever bought.
I have covered about 4000KM in it over the last year and this has included all sorts of trips from school runs to a trackday where the car was absolutely fantastic. The car gets used whenever possible, mostly too and from my weekly football games but as I travel frequently, there is the odd week where it sits patiently plugged into its battery conditioner.
What I like:
The way it drives
The stripped out nature of the car, gives it a real sense of purpose in my view
The noise, obviously
The way it looks from the rear 3/4 view
The drivetrain
The sense of occasion every time I sit in it - I own a blooming Ferrari, who would have thought it?
What I don't like so much:
Some cheap switchgear
Erm, thats it really
What it needs:
The boot area being tidied up - it has a spare wheel which had to be used by a previous owner. Said owner or the neanderthal who changed the wheel broke the straps which hold it in place and made a real mess of the toolkit and leather holdall. I suspect there are things missing but this will have to be attended to over the coming year.
Some TLC on the paintwork. This last point led to the only issue with the car over the last year…did I really think I would get a way without a little hissy fit? I did, and thought I would be gloating while writing this that I had a year if trouble free Ferrari motoring…
I went to a detailer recommended by a fellow Ferrari owner yesterday and discussed what the car needs and what I wanted. I agreed a much needed paint correction detail with him and on my way back home I suddenly lost the ability it change gear. Looking back I saw some smoke from the engine bay. You could say at that time that I sh*t myself. I got out and saw a pool of fluid beneath and a trail of the same substance trailing back up the road. Oops…more poop...
The car was soon recovered back to the workshop where the damage was diagnosed as a split pipe leading to the F1 pump. Split = no fluid reaching F1 pump = no change gear, Comprende?
Phew! A minor cost compared to what I feared and the Scud and I will be re-united tomorrow as opposed to it being another one of my ex-cars…I admit to being fickle on occasion and there is a very nice manual 355 I have seen advertised…
So what does the coming year hold? More track days for sure, more attention to some cosmetics and a garage companion in the shape of a Porsche 991 GT3 RS arriving in March/April In sha Allah as we say around here.
Breakdown of 1st Year:
Purchase Price = AED 405K (approx £72K)
Service + rectification of problems found during Pre-Purchase inspection = AED 29K (approx £5.1K)
New Key = don't get me started
F1 Pipe replacement = AED 1600 (approx £283)
There you have it, if you found this useful/interesting then I am glad to be of service. If not, well never mind eh?

Spot on review sir - 100% agree with all comments. I've done circa 7000 miles since last Oct and love it to bits. Really isn't anything that comes close (or even adding significant additional budget) at that price point for absolute drama and an every time event.
Wouldn't swap it for anything McLaren (don't do turbo's) / Lambo (prefer Fezza V8 noise) / Pork (done the GT3 - doesn't come close). Only possible next stop is a Speciale and even then the cost differential would have to be 'acceptable' as A. The Scud level is so high & B. the jump from Scud to Speciale isn't huge...
Currently mulling over a full Capristo system to really let her breathe / howl

I found the difference between the Scud and the Speciale pretty huge.... Ok, depends on the benchmark. CS >> Scud is bigger than Scud >> Speciale (that's from the factory + numerous reviews)

I have a Scud and have just spent a couple of days watching the GT3 RS pounding around the ring. It looks to be amazing around there and so planted it seems unflappable. I'm not sure I'd sell my Scud for one though.
Current plan is to keep them both. Just wondering if I might swap out of the Scud at that point into a 512 TR which a friend might be willing to sell to me or a manual 355...stain said:

All sorts of people I have spoken to who are 'in the know' have advised on keeping the Scud. A TR is a great car but it's not a Scud.
Ok sir, the Scud stays!Hopefully I can afford to keep it when the RS arrives. I am selling my fabulous C63 as I deffo can't keep that too. Really gutted about that.
I will be really interested to hear how you get on with the RS. It looks totally at home on the ring, being driven flat out by someone tasty behind the wheel but I'm not sure if you'd get that level of satisfaction from it anywhere else. If you can I'd recommend a trip out there to see them going round. They are epic to watch and get up close to in the paddock, where you can really see the differences to the GT3.

I've got a 991 GT3 (being sold as my RS is coming soon) and a 16M. The Porsche would eat the Ferrari on road or track for breakfast, lunch and dinner. But the Ferrari is more special and sounds much better, I just laugh and smile every time. I suspect the RS is better compared to the Speciale.
