My 355F1 just gets better.....but I guess it's now worthless
Discussion
Just got back from a group trip round Europe. 6 cars (my 355, Lotus Evora, Lotus Exige S, 370Z, Audi S3 and a Caymen S). Have to say the 355 was faultless throughout the whole trip (well apart from the clutch beeping at me in heavy traffic one day). Roughly 2300 miles in 9 days, covering 7 countries, between Zeebrugge and Monaco and back.
Given this is my second such trip in the last 3 years means I've now covered 13K miles in it and now it's racked up 49300 miles. That means it'll be over 50K soon.
We all know they were never built to last more than 40000, so I guess I've been lucky. Who'll give me 10p for it?

Good on you Sir. My 12 month old 458 Spider has 8000 miles on including a similar such trip. One of my Porkers is in the same position after 2 years of use and a similar trip. Screw residuals. Im trying to get away on the 11th to the Alps and take in the Frankfurt Motor show on the way back. Just need to get organised!
You can always make more money, you can't make more time, spend it wisely (by doing road trips into Europe!).

Glad to hear you are enjoying your car and a great road trip by the sounds of things. I think if a car has a few miles on it when you buy it then a few more ain't going to hurt it. Did you call in at Spa for the F1 ?. I totally agree with the time thing the clock is ticking so enjoy every day.
Oh and by the way I will give you 20p !!!!!

This is a perfect mantra to remember when you look at the car and think "hmm I'd go for a drive but worried about the mileage"You've just inspired me to take the car out tomorrow. Mileage wasn't the concern for me, but didn't have a specific reason as such to go out in it. But.. it's been over a week, the weather is getting a little better, so...

Yes I was there in the open grandstand Gold 4 at Eau Rouge. I thought the race wasn't the best I've seen, but the weather was great, I met up with someone I hadn't seen in years who just happened to be there and I also met Tiff Needell in my hotel bar in Spa, so all in all, pretty good!Oh and by the way I will give you 20p !!!!!
Oh, btw I've had a change of heart.....car is no longer for sale ;-)
Here is a summary of my trip (copied from my facebook status on Tuesday):
back home now and reflecting on a great holiday with a glass of grape juice.
In a nutshell.....between us:
6 x 2300 miles for each car, 9 days, 7 countries, 7 hotels, 2 ferries, 6 new friends, shed loads of petrol, tunnels and mountains, one F1 grand prix, a drive through the Monaco tunnel (feeling famous ha ha), a visit to a historical racing circuit (Reims), one chance meeting with a old friend, one celebrity meet, a handful of speed camera flashes, one engine management light, a pair of unexpected bald tyres, a wrecked clutch, 2 breakdown calls, a often terrified girlfriend and many memories that will last me a lifetime. Good times had by all, probably also including Alan.......when he gets his car back!
— thinking about a road trip with *************
50k miles on my '96 yellow Spider manual. Drives better than a low miler and probably more reliable now. I had a bad year when everything seemed to break through general wear and tear but that just means its mechanically nearly all new underneath!
I was thinking of selling too last year, but decided instead to keep it and have the cosmetic things sorted since they'd been neglected while I sorted out all the mechanicals.
Brilliant cars though, no wonder prices have gone through the roof as more people recognise this!

56k here.
I have no intention of selling but 2 small kids means I hardly use it currently.
Apart from annual servicing, I haven't disassembled it properly since 2009.
If I can get my garage built, I may well pull it all apart again as I enjoyed it last time.
I'm sure I can find some more stuff to bring back to new condition.
Maybe a full suspension rebuild and some bigger brakes...

Reading this has inspired me to, I have been reluctant to drive mine as it's coming close to big round number, I'm still in my 1st year of Ferrari ownership and covered nearly 1k miles which I have loved but have becom court up in the BIG MILEAGE DEBATE, some people do a couple of hundred miles max a year, you can't be getting any value out of ownership surely?
Message to self "stop being such a kill joy, open the god damn garage door and use it, otherwise go back to a life of browsing to small adds, fool !!!!"
F355's are pretty special cars, it's widely known and accepted that this particular model only records 100 miles in every 1000, unlimited low mileage, love it hahaaaa

Noooooo!!!!You must try harder :-) I did nearly 6000 in my first year! Had it 2.5 years now and so averaging approx. 5000/annum during my ownership. Compare this with the fact my car only covered 2000 miles in the whole of the previous four years of ownership. I figured that sorry fact needed addressing.I look at it this way. The more miles you do, the cheaper the running costs per mile. That's the way I sell it to my better half anyway......

If i ever owned a car(s) like this they would be on hundreds of thousands of miles due to the fact i would love driving them, not mothballing them as an investment! Whats the point in buying them if you really aren't going to use them as they were intended?
People buy them intending to use them, then realise how much mileage affects price, so do low miles. Then they (or their wife) realise it is costing several quid per mile in service costs alone, so you may as well use it to bring the price down. Once the mileage hits a certain point, the impact is a lot less.
Same with a lot of cars, not just F and Lambo. Been looking at a Z4M coupe for the Mrs and price seems governed by 40k or lower miles. Even the Mas suffers a bit from it, but having spent £2k on major service, tyres, tax, MOT, and insurance this year it's off to the ferry port in a fortnight to Roscoff, then to Angouleme for the Remparts races, then on to Aragon for MotoGP, but I am cheating and getting the long ferry back.
Should be about 1500 miles, only 10 of which will be in the UK
Besides, who knows what they'll be worth in 12 months? If they go up, the extra miles will mean the value just stays the same, and if the market crashes then the difference between high and low milers diminishes
