I'm a Ferrari Diehard and have owned several, still do inc F355GTS, 430 Scuderia etc...I was contemplating a 458 spider or 458 speciale as the last of the N/a V8's but I have to say haven driven a McLaren 650S spider I was absolutely blown away by how good it was. A massive leap over 12C, improved in every area but in particular the feel and sound.
They have finally engineered some soul and excitement into the leading technology and performance they have. Bl00dy brilliant job by McLaren and something us British should be proud of
McLaren are trying to put the GREAT back into Britain and with the 650S Yes IMHO they have hit the nail right on the head.
Looks are always subjective but with the new P1 inspired front end I think they just edge it over 458 and in terms of fit and finish, materials and build quality you notice the improvement and superior quality straight away.
Performance wise the 650s chews up and spits out the 458 ( even in Speciale form )
Yes the 458 sounds better as a N/a car but having driven both extensively I'm of the opinion the McLaren is the better car and you actually pay over the odds for the prancing horse badge and everything that comes with it
Both Awesome cars but you pays your money and take your choice. No losers with this one

I'm still in honeymoon period with Speciale and find it difficult to contemplate something better.

Always been on my "To do" list and not getting any younger !!
No racing for me this year due to pending shoulder surgery X2, but am looking at racing in 2016 again.

Interesting.I think the original 12C makes a lot of sense as a used purchase now.I have tried a 12C but not a 650S.Sounds like it is a big leap forward.

458 Speciale is awesome, just like 430 Scuderia to F430 was its a massive step up dynamically from the regular production 458 and a proper drivers car.I'm still in honeymoon period with Speciale and find it difficult to contemplate something better.

650S spider isn't as hardcore but has the performance and creature comforts with the roof down.
If I could of got a 458 Speciale A spider I would of bought that as my ultimate car and probably made money but as a regular production car for daily use I can't think of anything that gets close to a 650S as a supercar.
It has a very wide repertoire with its various settings and practicality.
2 different types of car really and dynamically as an out and out drivers car on a track the Speciale would be the better car but on the road I would say the McLaren is the winner.
I was thinking the same about a used 12C spider purchase being good value but when you compare it with 650S the price gap is more than worth it IMHO. The improvements might not look very significant on paper +25 bhp,
+60 lb/ft torque is neither here or there but with P1 front end, ceramic brakes and all the other bits making up the 25% new parts the sum of the package is greater than the individual components.
Objectively you can see the difference on paper but not only that, subjectively they have put some real feel and excitement into the car and that was my biggest disappointment with the 12C.
The fun has now been dialled in and its so much better for it. Ok it doesn't quite sound N/a V8 458 style but it does have a great soundtrack albeit it different as a turbo charged car.
Well worth getting yourself a drive in one at some time

It slightly pains me to admit it but... there is no way anyone with his head screwed on the right way would give up a speciale for either the 12c or a 650 unless one was in serious need of some cash. It is the much more focused and exciting car and while IMO the 12c/458 were pretty evenly matched, there is absolutely no contest between the speciale/650s that the speciale is the better car to drive. I'm still in honeymoon period with Speciale and find it difficult to contemplate something better.

To be fair, the speciale more correctly should be compared vs the P11R (aka lighter weight track focused 650 to be released in Geneva this year) when the 650 was basically just a quick update to the existing 12c. It's better in some respects but... nothing like as much suggested by a certain poster and in some subjective aspects I actually think it's worse.
