I have a manual 360 Spider and recently had a new clutch fitted. While out yesterday I had a couple of instances where I could not easily select 2nd when changing up from1st. This was mainly therefore when pulling away from lights or junctions and therefore simultaneously embarrassing and borderline dangerous, as following cars are confronted with a car in front which has suddenly decided to coast in neutral. Can obviously go straight into 3rd or by allowing the stick to centralise I can then get 2nd, but it's hardly slick.

No problem coming down the box from 4th or 3rd.

Any ideas what this might be ? Misaligned synchro ?

Thanks for that johnny, not a job I'm likely to take on myself, but good to know it's a relatively straightforward fix.

Had mine replaced with the hills engineering items at my annual service this year, mine was never as bad as yours sounds but still a pig to change gear.
Perfect now :-)
Also I think there are two bushes that wear.

Yes the most common fail-point is the selector bushing at the base of the lever. There are also two joints at the rear that can partially seize, and also if the selector cables are routed incorrectly the exhaust heat can cause poor shifting when hot. None of these items are particularly costly to address..

Thanks for replies. Car is booked in tomorrow for fixing. Problem is not any worse/better once the car is warm, so I think it's at the selector end. WOuld the two joints you refer to lead to a general shifting issue, or could that still just manifest itself only on 1st-2nd shift ?

As a rule, not very nice / easy to use at all times / gears, however seems particularly bad from 1st to 2nd.
Whoever does the job ensure they use the Hills bushes or you will have the same issue in the future.

Yes, if it's worn in one particular plain. It is mostly likely to be the rubbishy plastic bush at the base of the gear lever, as already mentioned. Takes about an hour and a half to replace with the excellent substitute from hill..
