Ferrari 458 Spyder or 458 Speciale

If you want the car this year it has to be the Spider - if you're that worried about residuals you probably can't afford it
The reason I mentioned residual/resale value because I sold my Mclaren 12C in February this year for 130K which is far less than what I paid for it new in 2012. The resale value on Ferrari seems to be better than other high perofrmance cars so thats why I mentioned residual or resale value. I understand the depreciation factor but still I think this is something to consider when buying a car of such value. If it was me, I would honestly go with the 458 Spyder.
Something like this looks absolutely wonderful.

I think the Speciale Spider is due Frankfurt this Autumn so UK deliveries possibly 18 months away if you have no dealer track record
PS OP - your sensitivity to residuals makes more sense as a former 12C owner ! A couple of years of Speciale should cost you less than that did but but a couple of years of Spider may not especially if you spend too much on extras

Unless you know of a Speciale currently for sale (presume at a premium) I'd reckon you'll be waiting for some time (into next year) before you get into a new one! Ferrari are limiting the supply which will always bolster residuals.
There are some nicely spec'd Spiders around, and I'm sure if you buy one now from a dealer, they'll will gladly put your name down for a Speciale Spider for when then do eventually arrive.

Speciale much better choice to the spider which will look very common in the future.
When these forums fill up with people talking about how good Speciales are (because they are very very good), you'll feel gutted you went for the Spider at not much of a difference in price. I think it will be a 'cheap' car to own if you keep it for a few years whereas the Spider is going to be expensive over the next five years IMO.
In 5 years time the next Spider will be around 2 years old, whereas the replacement Speciale will either not be here or just arriving....at £300k. The gap between the two cars at that time could be £50-£75k (458 Spider at £125k, Speciale at £175 to £200k - similar pattern to 430/Scud).
Unless you have to have Spider, there isn't a choice here IMV.

I have spoken to the dealer. Orderbooks are full for this year and if I order it now I'll take delivery in March next year. With regards to Speciale spyder he said that there are no plans at present and Speciale is on a limited production run and Ferrari will stop production next year in March. It looks like that Speciale is well in-demand car but I think the spyder looks better than Speciale. The stock exhaust on the Speciale is louder than standard car so I'm assuming due noise regulations on UK tracks cars delivered to UK will have a similar exhaust as the Italia.

I not sure that's right about the exhaust noise. The Speciale exhaust supposedly isn't louder than the Italia from the outside - partly due to how many tracks the 430 Scuderia couldn't be used at because it was so loud. I've been told by a friend that has his Speciale that there is a 'track exhaust' available that is quieter if you plan to do a lot of track days.
Put it this way, in about 10 years you'll either have something like this:
Or something like this:
One day all 458's will just be old Ferraris, some will be overly familiar and a bit tired, and will of course have depreciated to everyday car values, while others will remain exclusive, special and valuable.

I've just had the same decision to make. In the end I came to the following conclusions:
If I gave a monkeys about residuals I wouldn't be buying a £200K plus car
If I need to drive faster than a 458 Spider is capable of on the road, I shouldn't be on the road
I would rather drive my track car on track as its more fun, for cheaper, at lower speeds so I'm less likely to bin it (as contrary to popular opinion I'm not the Stig)and if I do bin it, £10000 is no great loss, so I can enjoy it without worrying
When I drove through Europe last year in my Porsche roadster I know I had more fun than I would in a hard top and it's an annual trip i'll now do in the 458
So I bought a spider.
Just my decision. For others I'm sure the thought process is different.
