Ferrari 360 clutch slip 2nd to 3rd
Discussion
Took my F1 360 out today for the first time in 3 weeks. Drove it for around 15 minutes and everything felt fine.
Drove towards the motorway and went around the roundabout and entered the slip road in 2nd and began flooring it down the slip road. I pressed the paddle to change to 3rd and nothing happened (I am going about 60-70mph at this stage) and I can hear the engine screaming also, so I press the paddle again and nothing, pressed again and then it went into 5th and I could see a pile of smoke in the engine bay where the clutch had obviously been spinning and burning (I could smell it also)
Naturally I was very concerned as I have never had this happen before, I got onto the motorway and drove it around 15 more miles and then came home. I tried various things whilst driving it after this including speeding up (to see if the revs went up but not the speed) but it drove fine and normal.
Has anyone else experienced this, and is it a warning sign the clutch is going to need changing soon ? the nearest SD2 is 120 miles from me, so not as easy as just popping into the nearest garage for a quick test. Could it just be the clutch was damp / cold ?
Any input much appreciated. Thank you.

Probably its a worn clutch but you might be lucky as you do not describe some of the usual shifting issues - it could be a mild lack of use tantrum and be calmed by a battery off reset - but......
Thanks for the reply. Yeah no other symptoms at all, and no high revs with no power issues etc... Just wondered if anyone else had experienced it AND what the problem was for them.HEllo!
I would agree that clutch is the most likely senario, and you could do with getting it replaced asap as the constant slipping will blue the flywheel which will then need replacement also, however it would be worth checking the F1 system, fluid, pis and clutch wear.
Where abouts are you? we may know a more regional Sd2 location.

Thanks for the reply Tim. I am based in Swansea and the nearest SD2 is in Lovetts in Swindon.
I will take it out again tomorrow and see if it shows any other symptoms or signs etc and see how it drives (I drove it approx 15 miles after that happened without a single issue)
I'm not doubting it may be the clutch is possibly worn, but curious if the way in which it happened today could have been down to non use for a few weeks.
Thank you

Your welcome to give me a call tomorrow to discuss it through, I maybe able to suggest a few things to diagnose a little easier, Your location is difficult, Bob Houghton is slightly closer than Dick Lovetts and Carrs are a little further (although I would travel to Carrs as my personal preference).
My number is on our website, hopefully we'll speak tomorrow.

Thanks for your comments and input, it is truly appreciated everyone.
To give you an update on how it went today, I took it out for over an hour and although it didn't do the same as yesterday, it isn't 100% right, here are some of the things I have noticed
- When pulling off in 1st, it sometimes feel like it judders (a bit like when you reverse up a slight incline but don't give enough right foot)
- It doesn't engage as quickly as usual when up-changing and there is a lag which is bigger than usual and more noticeable
- It seems to be much worse from 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd, once past there, it seems to be almost if not normal as before
- When it blips on the down change, it isn't as punchy as usual and sounds slightly slippy
As you said Tim, location is an issue and is a right pain but it is something I have learnt to live with now. I didn't want to call you today as it is Sunday and nobody deserves to be niggled with problems on a Sunday
Think it is going to have to go to the hospital either way though....

If you continue to drive it with a worn clutch there is a real danger that you can damage the flywheel - it overheats and dishes. If this happens the best scenario is that you have to buy a new flywheel when you get the clutch changed. The worst scenario is that the tech misses it and the concave flywheel eats the new clutch. Either way it's not cheap.
