Bad reaction from the public - real or not? and depreciation
Discussion
Considering my first Ferrari later this year, either a 360 Spider (manual) or really pushing the boat out and going for an F430 spider (manual again).
Having had a number of Porsches and TVR's over the last 10 years, I have never had a bad reaction from the public, quite the opposite with the TVR's. Usually get variuos positive reactions from thimbs up, to drivers winding down the windows to hear the speed six bellow as I pass them.
Reading various posts on this and other forums, it seems that many owners get bad reactions from the public, wker signs etc. This is starting to make me question my decision to go down the Ferrari route.
How bad is it? I would like to get a feel for the real world situation. So do you always get a bad reaction? or maybe once in a while? or have you never had one?
Or maybe you get positive reactions....please share your experiences.
Sorry but i'm trying to cover two issues here. My second question is about depreciation. I'm looking at 360's in the 40 - 50K price band or 430's upto maybe 72K
What are your thoughts on relative depreciation of those two over 3 to 5 years?
Cheers

All I can say is you'd better hurry up - only a few hours left!
On a serious note - only negative reaction I've had when in a Ferrari was on a test drive and I wasn't driving. Nothing but positive reactions since purchase - even from 'white van man'
I don't worry about depreciation, gave that up a long time ago - aim to spend more on fuel than I'll lose in value

When I first purchased my F430 F1 coupe 2 years ago I did get a few disapproving comments and hand signs. Not so much these days though, why that has changed, maybe economic climate duno. Certainly does not put me off driving the car. The good stuff / general acceptance from on lookers does by far outway the bad. I purchased my car privately from London and although a few things needed doing, its still worth what I paid for it going by what's being advertised at present. My car is an 05 so older 430. Older cars do seem to depreciate less. Good luck with your choice, the F430 is one hell of a car. Not driven a 360 so can't comment.

I would say a 360 at 40 ish or a 430 at 65 ish is a fairly safe bet, not huge ammounts in the difference in value of a 99 360 or an 03, condition and miles are the value factor.
430 has larger variance in price due to being newer.
I havent had any negative comments to my knowledge, and no one gave it to me I worked and paid for it so wouldnt really give a monkies what others think, however equally I wouldnt park it in asda's car park.

You will always get an odd gesture from some jealous individual but it wouldn't put me off buying my dream car. If you can stretch to it, IMHO the F430 is a significantly better car than the 360.
Depreciation on both has slowed right down now but the cheaper car pretty much always loses less. F355's are going up and helping 360's and 360's then help F430 so neither should cost you an absolute fortune now
Finding a manual F430 spider in the colour and spec of your choice may be a challenge so I wouldn't rule out F1 as again it was a significant improvement on F430.
If I was buying 360 I would probably stick to manual though.
I have a manual F355GTS and was going to buy a manual F430 being a traditionalist but when I drove the F1 I thought it was excellent and suited the car far better.
It takes a little time to get used to but after a couple of months it makes the stick change seem so slow and outdated for a supercar.
Good luck and remember condition and service history are more important than number of owners and mileage to a certain extent.

Not easy to comment directly as I drive a much more discreet Ferrari (Grey 599) however generally get very positive comments, allowed out of junctions etc which I did not get in my M3...
I was parked at the Euro Tunnel the day after the European Cup Final at Wembley and ran in to 000's of Bayern / Dortmund fans on the way home, all very friendly about Ferraris, wanted to talk about the engine etc.
My wife describes traveling in a Ferrari as similar to owning a dog as people always seem to pop over to have a chat...

The only time I had a bad reaction was quite recently when I overtook when I really shouldn't have and that reaction was to my driving, not the car. In almost 15 years of Ferrari ownership cannot remember a bad reaction but have had plenty positive reactions. Maybe it depends where you are. I am in Sussex and while I travel a fair bit have never taken a Ferrari into London.
Worst reaction i had was someone shouting show off, in over 4 years reaction has been really positive, but my best advice to you is don't let what other people think rob you of an experience like this, Don't let others dictate how you life your life, get a Ferrari and enjoy the fk out of it. You only live once.

Please please please do not allow the few idiots of this world putting you off getting a fantastic car.
One of lifes pleasures for me is seeing cars on the road I will never own.
Maybe I feel this way becuase I'm not so poor as to not be able to own one but I didn't feel any different when I was younger and I couldn't.

I've only ever had positive comments while driving Ferrars. I'd wager its sometimes how people are driving that provokes abuse rather than what they drive.
Personally I'd go for a top end 360 than a cheap 430, while the 430 is a better car I prefer the look of the 360. Either way you'll enjoy it.

Listen to this, it"s great advice. You will get the odd negative reaction, just laugh it off- it says far more about the protagonists than it does about you or what you choose to drive. One of lifes pleasures for me is seeing cars on the road I will never own.

On the depreciation front, it's always less for cheaper, older cars. My best car purchases have been those with the heart, not head, so I would say go for the car that excites you rather than one for which the financials are foremost.
Had my red cream 360 spider for sometime now driven London Suffolk Norfolk only ever had absolute positive reactions, people love them. I hope 360 ,s have reached low point for depreciation, buy resale red and manual 360 and consider the car a commodity, which Ferraris are , you won't go far wrong, Mike

Often the advice on here will be to just buy it, and that's the correct advice. They are amazing cars.
It's rare to get a bad reaction, but it's even rarer to get no reaction!
That's the thing with these cars - they are not in anyway discreet and the question is whether you mind being looked at or not really. Sometimes it can be a bit much when you just want to get from A to B. Sounds like you've had attention in the TVR so I wouldn't worry. Despite not necessarily being any more expensive than a well-specced BMW 5-series, they are not cars you can just pop out unnoticed in!
I always take the time to chat with people if they ask questions when parked up etc - these cars are to be shared and enjoyed with people - fellow enthusiasts, friends and strangers who are interested.
In just over half a year in a 360 one I've only had one negative comment in while in traffic in London, commenting "it's too loud" from a pedestrian. I couldn't argue, it is too loud
