Steering rack & pump
Discussion
Hi Keith,
First off - I’d want to know why you need both rack and pump?
Steering racks do degrade, and do need attention - but the pump? That should either work or fail….
However, word of warning - the replacement pumps provided by Porsche now are a new design, and in my experience not so good.. The originals were a cast aluminium body, and the replacements are a billet cut body. They get very hot and boil the fluid (that’s my theory- just try and touch one!!).
My original pump failed (it split and emptied its contents) so I got a new pump from OPC. Bugger to fit, but less than 200 miles in and the new one was grinding.
Took it off and sent back to Porsche who checked it and sent another.
Stuck this one in and in less than 100 miles in and it was grinding too!
This time I got a pump from eBay Germany from a ‘96 breaker and it’s been fine for a couple thousand miles so far.
