Dipped Beam fusing out
Discussion
Hello all
As per the title the fuse for one of my headlamps (993) blows the fuse every time, just one side. I’ve tried different bulbs and each time the same, fuse gone immediately they’re switched on.
Headlamps are HID.
Anyone had anything similar or have any bright ideas of what could be the cause?

They must be aftermarket - the ballasts on each side are different. Are they easy to swap over?
And yes the fuse blows immediately, before the headlights even get a chance to light (with the last fuse I recorded the switch-on with my phone camera). Guess that probably answers the question that it’s a problem with the ballast if no power ever gets as far as the bulb…

Thanks OC - interesting read. Confirms mine are both aftermarket without even revisiting the car... I don't have that big black plastic unit at the bulb housing (the one in the linked thread with the yellow shock warning label).https://rennlist.com/forums/993-forum/1452335-help...
Would you agree with changing to the slim ballast inside the light unit as per that thread?
It's a tricky one isn't it? General consensus is that ballasts fail, not anything else, so just changing out the ballast should solve your issue.
(I've been 'lucky' in that my original Tore ballasts are still going strong.)
How much are single ballasts
vs
a whole kit with warranty from someone like Hids4u ?
ETA what you should do is swop over your existing ballasts, just to be certain. Be very careful with high voltage if you test with electrickery exposed.
I would also err on the side of caution if you do buy a new kit, and choose 35W. My original Tore HIDs are 35w, and they produce more than enough illumination. The 55W versions obviously draw more current? and therefore MAY cause an issue with older design wiring etc etc.
