This has been discussed in a few places - Ch3tman, for one, asked the questions.

The Bosch SR0451N has been listed as a suitable replacement for the 964 casing engines for some time, but you never know for sure if getting newer is the correct path.

Well I decided (thanks Ch3tman) the positives outweighed any possible negatives, and ordered a new one from Europe. I just wanted new rather than recon, and the cost was about the same.

I also asked the garage to replace the starter-motor earth-strap, as my original starter would ALWAYS spin perfectly from cold, but usually 'clunked' and failed when the engine was hot.

Do it. The car spins up so much faster, it's unreal.

Totally agree... Had one on mine for a couple of years. Great programmable and the shorter starter makes it possible to get a spanner on the awkward top bolt to get the right torque set.

Hello Orange Curry,
Why did you order the new starter motor from Europe?

...as I said above, at the time the ones for sale in Europe were new and cheaper - the ones for sale in the UK seemed to be recons and more expensive.

This may have changed with location-varying price rises.
