I have been on a long and expensive journey with my old 1976 911s and recently thinking about chopping it in for a cheaper Elise or 987.2 or something else a bit less needy.

I have spent far too long on my back under the blasted thing and it is often one step forward and two back...I bought cheap, took a punt and it didn't really play out so only myself to blame!

It popped its cylinder last May so I have already lost one summer and most of this, it should be finished soon but I have lost a lot of love for it and wonder if something lower maintenance would be more sensible.

I enjoy the 'scene', Boxengasse etc but after attending events for a few years and seeing the same cars it doesn't captivate me like the first time walking on to a field full of air-cooled Porsches.

Has anyone done the same, any thoughts / regrets (once I sell it I will never be able to afford another air-cooled 911!) ?

Firstly I feel your pain!!

I have had about 30 911's and the latest is a 1970 2.2S / RSR nad its been with the garage off and on for 9 months !! I have driven it twice ! And now spent another £20k on it, I am in the lucky position of having other classics / sports cars to use otherwise I would be really fed up.

I have also had 2 elises, a S1 sport 160 and a S2 (with Toyota engine)

I went everywhere in the S2 and a must is air con if you want to use it lots, everyone will tell you you dont need it but I wouldnt have one without AC and I woulnt have a Rover engine one.

So would I take it over a 1970's 911 ..... without a doubt if I wanted something fun to use and not to worry about what could go wrong / spend time in the garage absolutely yes !!

Just to be completely the opposite, for me an S1 Elise (in Norfolk Mustard Yellow) with a rorty tuned K-Series would be modern-classic heaven for me.

Less than a 100 miles into running in, it started misfiring badly and looks like oil cooler split...

I’ve had a few Porsche’s over the years, including a ‘74 Carrera backdate by Tutthills, a few 993’s, 997’s, GT3’s etc etc.

Luckily I’ve not had any real problems other than with a 993 Turbo that had engine management issues that eventually made me give in and get my money back via the dealer.

I can see your attraction to an Elise, I’ve had an S2 111S and still have an S1 slightly modded that we use as a track car…

It’s bloody wonderful. I’ll never sell it. It gets driven to the track, hammers round the track all day, then gets driven home. So much fun on track and on the road even at 50 on the back twisties .

Last week at Anglesey.

The S2 is a little more refined, a bit heavier, a 1.9 Toyota ‘R’ is a fabulous combination of handling and performance. A real mini Ferrari feel.

Here’s my old 111S.

If you drove one I suspect you’d buy one. For me, the S1 is the pick for pure rawness, but then they’re all brilliant fun so you can’t go wrong really.

If you’re anywhere near the Midlands you’d be welcome to come for a ride. All part of the fun in owning one is to share the experience.
