964 - Head unit suggestions
Discussion
Morning all, looking to replace the head unit on my new to me 964 Targa. It has come with a Nakamichi CD unit which I want to get rid of. A Quick google seems to suggest the most common upgrades are the full PCCM unit with the small screen, or the Blaupunkt Bremen SQR 46.
I would like DAB and USB input for longer runs and bluetooth would be nice but not essential so leaning toward the Blaupunkt.
Any experiences or suggestions welcome - thanks.

Thank you, I know what the PCCM unit is and have read around it. More hoping to get any experiences if any other owners have changed to either of these or any other I should consider? It depends what connectivity you require. Becker stuff is/was OEM for sports cars in period and the later ones had bluetooth connections etc but obviously not appleplay etc. The Cascade pro is probably the most up to date but that is relative. They are good quality and look appropriate.
The Continental (sometimes branded VDO) units are very good. I have one in a 993. Bergvill gives excellent service and support: https://www.bergvillfx.com/categories/dab-head-uni... I think you can get them on Amazon now. Look period and have a lot of features.

I put the first generation Porsche Classic unit in mine. It looks good but I question its value if your eyesight isn't pin sharp. Sound is OK but I mostly use it to funnel output from my phone to the car using apps because they give better reception quality than FM (no DAB in the original unit). I use WAZE on the phone as well making the unit savtnav somewhat redundant.
I paid a small fortune for a period correct second hand Becker Mexico some years ago. There's no denighing it looks great and is a quality product. However, if I was doing it today I would either buy the Continental from Bergvill or the Blaupunkt Bremen.
The Porsche Classic unit is way too expensive. CarPlay is a complete waste of time when the display is smaller than most modern phones. The Nav is also redundant when Google maps is so easy available on your phone.

I recommend the Parrot Asteroid Classic, works great both with Android or iPhone and the look of it was the most toned down sympathetic looking unit I found....and they can be bought for about £100 now.

One chap even changed the button to be all the more Porsche looking.

I wouldn’t, I did originally, but the continental is a better choice.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jQkIs8Sp11k

My old one sits forlorn in the shed…
I, as good as never use a radio in my car, not a porsche but Z3 with V8 radio ;-)
So I wanted a lightweight something to fill the gap, I bought a half the long/deep radio, which looks cool and classic-ish at the same time, it even has some modern things in it :-) don't ask me what, I forgot because I do not use it :-)
of course you can buy way more classic looks radio's, but its not crazy modern that it stand out to much? maybe you can put a little round black sticker on the 'volume' button or put a small porsche logo on that :-)
so, no deep dash needed, saving a bit weight (half of it) and does not look to 2050
it comes with a mic you can place somewhere for blue tooth for your phone

The Blaupunkt is also half-lengthSo I wanted a lightweight something to fill the gap, I bought a half the long/deep radio, which looks cool and classic-ish at the same time, it even has some modern things in it :-) don't ask me what, I forgot because I do not use it :-)

Yeah, I have the same opinion. I bought it because it had the Porsche badge on it, always knew I’d keep using Google Maps, and listen mostly to podcasts and audiobooks on the phone. For reasons that I can’t quite explain I don’t regret buying it.Blaupunkt SQR46 DAB all the way.
Retro looks with the latest tech (USB, Bluetooth + Streaming, DAB radio etc).
Picture of my 964 Turbo with the Blaupunkt - period correct looks imo.
