911 Headlights - RPM LumeTechnik LED Headlight Conversion
Discussion
Whilst browsing I came across RPM's LumeTechnik LED Headlight Conversion for all 911's pre-993 (early to 964).
Video here
Not cheap at £636 to £1,799 (inc VAT) depending on Basic or Full kit for your model.
In an aim to address headlight performance on earlier 911’s, RPM Technik has launched its own LED headlight conversion for fitment to air-cooled models.
Suitable for models ranging from all 911’s up to and including 964, the LumeTechnik light unit is designed to simply replace the existing light assembly with no additional bulky transformers, by simply plugging into the cars original wiring. The lifetime of the units is equally as impressive by providing around 30,000 hours of usage before requiring replacement. These lights are one of the brightest LED high and low beam units available.
Triple LED technology
30,000 hours of usage
Plug and play
Can be run with early clear lenses or later standard “textured” lens
TUV approved
E marked
Available in RHD or LHD
The LED headlight unit mounts in the original 911 headlight rim so all original adjusters and fixings are retained.
Basic kit – This fits into your into your original headlight (unless you have option code M605 1987 onwards where a full kit is required)
Full kit – The chrome outer ring sits behind the original colour coded rim (where applicable)
Chrome or dark chrome – this is the finish to the light face itself (see picture)
Has anyone had seen, tried or had these fitted to their early 911?

been around for ages
you can build your own up for less money with very basic knowledge ..plenty of threads out there on pelican
John Audette builds some nice units , both LHD & RHD

Or , keep your existing & fit the new LED h4 bulbs ( I have some in my 964 & i'm really impressed )

Changing the bulbs does help (I think I have nightbreakers but I wouldn't want to commit to that) but the biggest change I have had is from using relays for the headlights:

The H4 replacement hi/lo beam LEDs are cheap on ebay. The results are far removed from the old candles. I prefer the ones with braided heat sink tails rather than an internal fan, there is plenty of room in the headlamp bowl to install them. One example of many

I fitted these to my 964 and I'm really pleased with them. Made a massive difference to the original bulbs for a small outlay

I like the idea of LEDs...but if they scatter like xenon upgrade kits they won't be for me.
lights are homologated (and type aproved) as a complete unit. means, bulb&reflector&lens
if only 1 component is changed the type-approval is gone. those are the strict rules applied e.g. in Germany.
why is it? because there is somebody testing the comlete equipment, investing a lot of time and effort that things are right and comply with the rules:
e.g. the headlights have been tested to ensure that oncoming traffic is not dazzled.
which is often the case when some amateurs are doing some home-made-in-the-shed conversions.
and at the end of the day "i passed the Mot, they did not say anything" is not an approval at all, that things were made right and legally correct.
