Crazy prices or Not !
Discussion
Have just seen that the very nice 35k miles 3.2 Carrera with Crawford Porsche has been sold.
Only with them for about 3 to 4 weeks and on the market for £45K !!!
Such a spread of prices at the moment for the 3.2.
Watch out 993s they are catching you up.
Is this sustainable or just a lot of hype about them ?
Have one myself and am keeping it, not for investment value, but because its a great car to drive and to look at.

I bet if Adrian was selling it, and for that dosh, it would be immaculate and something special.Only with them for about 3 to 4 weeks and on the market for £45K !!!

Watch out 993? ........... 3.2s are already there matey. Right old mega miles if shiny 3.2s, are more money than similar leggy miles 993s.
difficult to find mint 993 C2, 3.2 C or even earlier SC and 964C2 nowadays but I know what you mean. I think the Adrian Crawford car was okay at that money because where can you find another special car like that. Where I struggle are the cars which look all shiny and new but are rust buckets underneath being priced well above > £20k.
SCM has a car with approaching 90k miles 3.2 C for £40k. Whilst it looks like a very nice car they seem to think a 90k mile car is worth just £3k less than the minty Crawford low miles car in concourse condition. I suppose the Crawford car did have very odd colour combo with guards over blur pinstripe interior and no sports seats. Markets all over the place at the moment for all these air-cooled cars. I suppose condition is so varied there is always going to be a huge spread but some of the prices are optimistic at best

Low mileage aircooled 911's will always fetch a premium.
Whether it's worth it really depends on what you want to use the car for. I've always found that 3.2 Carrera's are best driven (rather than kept as garage queens).
Having had two 3.2 Carrera's I'd love another but there's a lot of mutton dressed as lamb and they be cost a fair amount to keep in top condition (sure some have run without issue).
I wouldn't be put off my a 100k mile car, but you do need to consider the cost of work. Engine rebuilt £5-6k, kidney bowl rust £1.5k per side, suspension, oil lines, gearbox. It's easy to spend another £5k on top of car refreshing it, so better to find a car that has a history of being kept in good order.
Just because some mint cars are making good money doesn't mean everything is worth that. Even though there are only a limited number of good cars (which keeps prices high) there is a greater range of alternative Porsche and other marques as you head £20k+ which narrows the buyers to those who really want a 3.2 and can afford/want to pay the premium.
They're fantastic cars, raw, agricultural and not for everyone!
Buy one because you love it, not because it might appreciate.
If you're lucky it might not cost you too much to run.

Was offered a genuine 17,000 mile time warp '84 carrera black/black for £35k this week, and bulked at it. Only 2 owners, all history and MOTs, still had tags on spare wheel and factory sticker inside passenger door.
Starting to think passing it up was the worst days work I did?
I have to buy with head and heart, and looking at it, I just didn't fancy it.

If its as nice as you say Adrian Crawford could sell it on consignment for £50k-£60k with their eyes closedStarting to think passing it up was the worst days work I did?

I can't believe some of the prices being asked for air cooled cars, surely there can't be that many people willing to pay this much for them, unless they think they will turn a profit, bubble could burst at some point.
Yes, prices will go down a bit now that the anniversary is over, but personally, I’m not too worried... just wait until the rich chinese jump on the bandwagon, prices for classic cars will explode again and the pre-73 aircooled 911s are indisputable icons.EricE said:

Rich Chinese also have to be educated in that fact that it is actually cool to drive around in your own car rather than be chauffeured. I also wonder whether the government might crack down heavily on ostantatious displays of wealth and if so, what this would mean for the art and car markets? You also need to consider what other Porsche and other marques you can buy for £15-25k.
The majority of people would choose a 997, 997 or Boxster variant over a 3.2 Carrera if choosing a Porsche just because it's a more modern car, there is a greater supply and it's easier to buy a good one.
People often like the look of them, but find the driving too raw and agricultural, they aren't for everyone.

That number of miles and value is exceptional as the low mileage makes it a collctors piece. You wouldn't drive it as you'd devalue it.
Better to buy a higher mileage car and drive it. For £60k I'd choose a higher mileage car and build my own car or buy something like this!

Only if they didn't know about modern ones having engines made of chocolate. My mate's boss bought a really nice 997 at auction for a bargain price on an impulse. He'd never heard of IMS, or bore scoring. I was very skeptical when I heard what he'd paid for it, it now has an appointment with Hartech in Bolton for an engine rebuild.Chester Lampwick said:

The problem is this, obviously the life cost of keeping a nice 3.2 or SC is far more than a modern car, i've owned numerous air-cooled cars all minters and i've owned various water-cooled cars all minters the latter were cheaper to maintain and obviously you don't worry about the tin worm everytime you get some drizzle, i love the older stuff and will no doubt step back into the fold again now the GT3 has gone, that said some of the enjoyment of owning a nice air-cooled IB car is diluted through fear of using it especially with the value of them and this in my opinion is the negative side coupled with the maintenance issue and constantly trying to keep the s
t out of the B Posts etc.
As i'm having marital issues with a snake with tits i'm trying to release some cash hence getting rid of the best Pork i've ever owned from a driving perspective, and here goes my issue do i buy another 3.2 for circa 25ish or do i go back to the 996 Turbo (had 2) which i can use in all weathers? I'm even considering (no doubt get some grief now) a 996 C4S cab with PSE, still one of the prettiest 911's made.

996's are damn good value for money for the pleasure they offer...

Do like your 6.2GT3, be a shame to dispose of it.

If its one car has to be either of the 996s. I think the C4s is a really good shout - good looking car and the best PSE ever. Where the feck can we really drive turbos nowadays to even within 50% of their ability? Even the C4s is probably too quick for road use and could just as easily lose you your license. 993 C2 worth considering too. I think 993s are still undervaluedThe problem is this, obviously the life cost of keeping a nice 3.2 or SC is far more than a modern car, i've owned numerous air-cooled cars all minters and i've owned various water-cooled cars all minters the latter were cheaper to maintain and obviously you don't worry about the tin worm everytime you get some drizzle, i love the older stuff and will no doubt step back into the fold again now the GT3 has gone, that said some of the enjoyment of owning a nice air-cooled IB car is diluted through fear of using it especially with the value of them and this in my opinion is the negative side coupled with the maintenance issue and constantly trying to keep the s
