1974 2.7 carrera
Discussion
They have their advocates.
I would guess that a '74 Carrera would weigh in at 50kg more than a typical RS Touring and 100kg more than a typical RS Sport (Lightweight).
However, the crucial factor with any older car is how fresh and well set up it might be. Even many genuine RSs do not drive as well as they should if components are worn, tired or not correctly set up. Engine, gearbox, diff, MFI, brakes, steering, geometry, tyres.... they all need to be A1 and functioning at their optimim to deliver the best drive.

Are they popular at all or is the 3ltr a better car?I would guess that a '74 Carrera would weigh in at 50kg more than a typical RS Touring and 100kg more than a typical RS Sport (Lightweight).

The engine and MFI is identical to the revered Carrera RS so interest and values have escalated with this connection.
The 3.0 Carreras are less sought after. I think an SC is better and a 3.2 Carrera even better still. IMO A really nice G50 is the best of the IB 911s. And, I'd buy an '88/89 Club Sport over a 2.7 Carrera.

The 2.7 carrera is essentially a 2.7 RS underneath, so prices have been pushed up by people wanting the RS experience without the cost.
The 3.0 carrera isn't.
But there aren't many left (from an initially short production run anyway) so in this daft classic car bubble we're experiencing prices are on the up, if still at the reasonable level.
Me, I wouldn't give a st about what engine it's got in it, buy one that some nutter has spent thousands on restoring at a knock down price while you still can.
All the money in old porsches is in the body work, the engines, boxes & suspension are all known ball park figures. Find one that's been restored & you won't have to go through the pain of funding it yourself.
I'm not sure if that's answering your question though? Are you asking which is best investment-wise or which is best to drive?

Hi many tks. Bit of both really is the answer to your question but there are some rather garish colour combinations I've noticed which I guess is understandable given the period. The 3.0 carrera isn't.

3ltrs are early 20's I've seen but will they ever be sought after?

Yeah I know the blue/tan one that's up for sale at the moment, nice car.3ltrs are early 20's I've seen.
2.7's are daft money now, if you can get one under 50k it's going to need a lot of work!
As someone else said to drive, they're just another old 911. Sounds harsh but every car is different so it just depends on how it's set up & to what spec.
For the record I hated mine. Nice for bimbling around in (& surprisingly fast) but it was a st drive compared to something modern, but that's just me. There's no way I'd be spending the necessary on a 2.7 carrera when I could be in a 993RS for the same coin.

Actually that's a very good point. So a 3ltr in ok combinations a good buy in your opinion?2.7's are daft money now, if you can get one under 50k it's going to need a lot of work!

No because in my opinion there fking awful to drive & I don't buy into the whole "ooh it's rare so it must be valuable" bullst. But obviously that's just my opinion & why I don't have one
Fair play to those who like them, but I did an inspection for an 88 super sport cab a couple of months back, super low mileage, properly rare & available at the same price an an old 3.0 carrera. Much nicer thing.
All depends on what you want? But what does a 2.7 or 3.0 carrera offer that a 3.0SC doesn't? Or a 3.2? You get a load of "oh they're lighter" or "it's a zingier engine" bks but all I can see is its gets you an older number plate & not much else.
If you want an old 911 I wouldn't care which model it was, I'd just buy one that had been fully restored. So if you're looking at a 3.0 carrera that's had £30k spent on a bare metal resto & they're only asking £25k, I'd say it's a good buy

i sold my 88 clubsport and a 68 2.0s swb to buy this 1975 2.7 carrera and i dont regret it for a moment... the 911/83 engine behind, mfi fuelled..pukka a wealth of information and opinion can be found on ddk/impactbumpers.comThe 3.0 Carreras are less sought after. OP, are we all talking about the same thing here?
Ie are you talking about either a 2.7 or 3ltr Carrera, or a 2.7 narrow body (as in less flared arches)or the later 3 ltr SC?
A 2.7 narrow body 74 - 77 was in standard trim pretty damn slow, the S was better bit the NB 2.7 was less reliable than the later water cooled jobies of even the 996/997.
2.7 NB = around 11 - 20K for a minter .......
2.7 Carrera, blimey loads of money now, 50K plus maybe. (In 2004 I missed out on one for 12.5K)
As far as I'm aware the 2.7 Carrera and NB 2.7 are not the same engine.
3ltr Carrera, 15 - 30K for a minter?
3ltr SC 8 - 20 K
IMO if you want early impact bumper, go for a good SC. Damn site cheaper, more powerful and alot more reliable than the 2.7 ..... thats non Carrera of course.
Personally, unless you are determined to have a narrow arched 911, I would get a 3.2, far better IMO and just about bullet proof but still with the old fashioned feel. (especially pre 1986)

hi mate was originally talking about the 2.7 Carrera and have since descovered that yes the v expensive so thought id ask about the 3ltr Carrera as driven by John Glynn (thou i dont know the power output??) but wasnt talking about the SC thou there was one recently sold at 911V that had been tip to toe restored and went for 18.Ie are you talking about either a 2.7 or 3ltr Carrera, or a 2.7 narrow body (as in less flared arches)or the later 3 ltr SC?

Just chewing the fat really
3 ltr Carrera .... hmmmmm 200BHP from memory, 2.7 Carrera was 210 but not as torquey as the 3, same shell as the SC, but a later SC knocks out 210 and is half the money of a 3lr, and I believe no heavier.
I owned a 2.7 (non Carrera) I wouldn't contemplate a 2.7 Carrera now (thats if I had the funds to buy one). Just too much money to be able to enjoy without worrying everytime I parked her up.
FYI 2.7 NB felt slowish, but the NB is a very pretty car, with some great interior trim options.
Best of luck with your search.

I've drooled over that car b4. Didnt u import it from somewhere?
i looked for over 2 years for a rhd one of these that wasnt a money pit.. matching numbers etc.. this car is a uk car and was exported to Oz in the eighties (was painted black and wearing turbo flares at the time). since then it's had a full rotisserie restoration around five years ago and i shipped it back to the uk at the beginning of this year deeming it to be the best rhd i could find without having to do a restoration. i've just shipped it to bob watson to fit ssi/dansk exhaust setup and full rolling road tune.the 2.4s values were dragged up by the 2.7rs and this was a bit of a sleeper but the market has cottoned on now. phil at tech9 restored and sold an acid blau lhd car at techno classica essen this year for 100k euro.
there are a couple of minerva blue 3.0 coupes knocking about in the ad's at the moment for 24-26k and an interesting car at ps which is lhd.
