My new Cayenne Project - lots to do!
Discussion
Hi everyone, we have a fabulous Q4 eTron that does everything we need, however I have always fancied a Porsche, and enjoy tinkering with cars - although I have no idea mechanically (an awful combination!) so I have purchased a project.. A 2011 Cayenne Diesel, with 90k miles.
I initially discarded it when looking due to the interior colour, however it grew on me, and after a while I came to the conclusion I fancied something other than black. I got a great deal on the price, which is handy as it has many issues - I hope none of which are too serious. Such as:
1. The power boot takes three attempts to open as it keeps stopping mid function. Reading online it sounds like maybe a gas strut has failed?
2. All front speakers don’t work, with only sound coming from the rear? Apparently the battery was replaced recently, perhaps this could be related?
3. The drivers side rear door rubber is ripped and needs replacing.
4. There is an occasional clonk when shifting down from 3rd to 2nd. It’s not too harsh, but noticeable. The gearbox oil has never been replaced.
5. The n/r door lock and window don’t work. You can only open it from the inside.
6. The alloys need pairing. Does anyone know the Spyder paint colour / code? I’ve read elsewhere it’s PORSCHE TITAN GREY MET EP8?
7. The rear quarter chrome is very pitted and damaged from cleaning chemicals. It’s the same on both sides, but all other areas are okay. Can these be replaced easily?
8. The auto handbrake button seems inoperative?
9. The chrome strip at the base of the boot seems to have water or corrosion behind?
I’ve leaned to like the interior, but feel the wood trim would look so much better in black or silver?
Spec wise I think it’s pretty basic, with no heated seats (I missed this!!!), no air suspension, no uprated sound. But it does have pan roof, nice wheels, power boot and power fold mirrors. Clearly I’m easily pleased!
Any advice on any of the above mentioned issues will be greatly appreciated. I will keep this thread live to document my progress - and journey / financial misery!

Congratulations on your GTS purchase.
I have to say, I’m loving the car. Firstly, I decided to sort the alloys out, rubbing down the scuffs and repainting. I then purchased some centre caps, that had to be painted too, but a really helpful chap in Halfords’s helped me find an exact OEM colour match. The job is far from perfect, but it has certainly taken your eye off the imperfections while I sort some of the other issues.
I then gave the car a good clean. The first wash is such an event in any buying journey, and I didn’t find anything of concern, it seems really well put together, and the overall condition is great.
I then swooped out the mats for some genuine Porsche ones in black, that look great. I’m just keeping my eye out now for some interior trim inserts in black or silver to replace the wood.

- 8. Handbrake.
Change the front diff oil - the oil capacity isn't enough and the pinion bearing wears. Overfill via the breather.
Change the fuel filter - they should be done every 10k but unlikely it has. Drain the bowl with a turkey baster, note the amount of silver shavings from the HP fuel pump. Monitor accordingly.
Great advice, thank you. I got the auto hand break working, I was lifting the button wrong (facepalm!) All my Audi s have been lift to operate, not push.
I certainly intend to get the gearbox oil and transfer case / diff (same thing?) oil changed - most people I ve spoken to have suggested this should resolve the harsh downshift. Fingers crossed!

Front differential + rear differential + transfer box (on a diesel) all take 75/90w gear oil. Petrols have a different transfer case. There's quite a bit of confusion about this and it takes a fair bit of googling to figure out, but the diesels have a torsen style transfer case whereas the petrols have an actuator controlled torque split.
It's easy to DIY these oil changes ^
The gearbox uses 3390 - I haven't done mine yet but did my 955's gearbox last year. If the downshift is still harsh following an oil change then the valve body can be changed.
The front differential was noisy on my 165k 955 and was changed, the diff on my 125k 958 is slightly noisy. Dont ignore the front diff is my advice!
More info if you check the later pages my £500 Cayenne thread.

Yep!......and do the fuel filter regardless at the same time (it's really easy DIY 1 spanner level to change), and then use the turkeybaster to remove as much PAS fluid as possible for a partial flush. Do the same in a few months time.
Very important that I forgot last time!
Clean the front scuttle drains, these drain windscreen water through the engine bay but become blocked with leaves and twigs. Water then overfills and comes into the cabin area wetting the carpets. The main canbus cabling runs under here and corrodes causing all manner of electrical issues. Plenty of YT videos on where and how.
Also remove and clean / de-coke the throttle body as they get gummed up with EGR infeed.
Don't ignore the fuel filter though - it's an indication of HP fuel pump health which will financially write the car off if not heeded.

Currently trying to remove the amp, and this circular clip / plastic screw - but it doesn’t seem to be a screw, and is very firmly in place…?
