Used Cayenne advice
Discussion
Hi,
I am considering a used Cayenne.Unfortunately due to my budget of £20k it is going to be an older model (which might not be a bad thing in the end).
I'd also appreciate if there was a guide or if anyone had any advice to specific issues that certain models had, and things that may need done at certain mileage points so I know what to look out for.
In terms of specifications and optional extras, is there anything from a mechancial point of view people would consider as a must have? Or if there is anything in particular I should look for specifically overall?
Thanks

Sometimes you can find the odd Cayenne at that price level with OPC warranty. That would be a no-brainer for me. I am considering a used Cayenne.Unfortunately due to my budget of £20k it is going to be an older model (which might not be a bad thing in the end).

A gen 2 plug-in hybrid is worth considering if you do a lot of short trips. Key options IMO are air suspension with PASM, panoramic roof, and heated seats.I am considering a used Cayenne.Unfortunately due to my budget of £20k it is going to be an older model (which might not be a bad thing in the end).

We have a daily hack Cayenne platinum edition 3.0 V6 , great engine pulls like a train does tonns of MPG
Try and get a platinum edition as you get the panroof and a fair bit of no cost options, Air suspension i would not worry about as the standard setup is perfectly fine and rides great

I have a 2013 GTS. I’ve never owned a car for anywhere near as long but it’s such a good car I’m keeping it.
Servicing isn’t cheap and it does have a serious drinking problem. I’m getting about 24mpg on a trip and under 20mpg around town. All is forgiven when going through a tunnel. I play the Lincoln Tunnel into NYC like a church organ. The cold start has set off car alarms. But, it’s not obnoxious inside and it’s driving characteristics when you aren’t 100% are what have impressed me. It’s NA so no turbo lag. Going around people is effortless.
I recently had the thermostat changed and the mechanic tried to buy it off me. In a moment of weakness I strayed into the sales side where the sales team told me to keep mine for now.

I'm on my second Cayenne and would highly recommend them. my first was 958.1 3.0 V6 diesel (euro5), sold with 120+K. Current one is a 958.2 (facelift) 3.0 V6 diesel, but this one is EURO6 and has a bit more more power. Facelift looks better IMO with the updated lights, steering wheel etc.
Folk will say avoid the panoramic roof, I say thats p1sh! and its a must have as it really makes a difference with the interior. had no issues with the roof on both cayennes.
PASM makes a difference as well, current one has it, previous one didnt. Air suspension is desirable but there is an obvious cost associated with any issues & repairs.
i had some big bills on the first Cayenne - injectors, oil filter housing, drive belt and crankshaft oil seal.
The current one has had a service and thats all (so far). Currently on 85k with FSH, great car.
OP I might be selling mine this year probably for £21K maybe £20K if you are interested? I keep looking at FF Range Rovers (brave pills?) and Alfa Romeo Giulias.......

This /\ , I purchased a 2010 958.1 from BCA in 2020, it was meant as a stop gap after a sold a Mustang and Navara. Both were less that 3 years old but mileage was racking up. I had previously also had the latest shape Q7 which was a good car. The Cayenne cost me 12k with 90k on the clock, since then I have added another 100k and used it during a period of renovations. These cars drive superbly but they can give you the odd big bill, most of mine have been wear and tear related (control arm bush, and snapped spring). I then chose to replace the front shocks as the same time as the other work. We have a 981 Boxster S and Etron GT but the Cayenne is used for long journey or dog duties. A 958.2 or a Range Rover will replace it in 2025, If I don't get a V8 Cayenne next then I'm sure I will regret the RR purchase at some point...I'm on my second Cayenne and would highly recommend them. my first was 958.1 3.0 V6 diesel (euro5), sold with 120+K. Thanks all, appreciate the thoughts.
I have been toying with many different things.
FFRR
Cayennes
Q5's
GLC
X5
X5's - Look good on the outside, actually despise the interior. It's highly irrational and having owned a similar age 1 series I found the interior to be disappointing. Can't fault the build quality though.
GLC's etc - Too expensive, but again, don't like the interior.
Q5s - Guess what!
FFRR - For me, hands down best looking, best interior. I'd take this all day every day, however the mad insurance and potential for problems prices are heavily putting me off.
I have somewhat come to the conclusion to wait until the summer, by that point I'll have had a pay rise so will be able to increase the budget by a few k also which may just tip me over the line in terms of getting a good example.
I think for a Cayenne, I'd want a model with specific options based on advice given and from what my own reasearch tells me. My eyes keep wandering back to the FFRR though...

Interesting thoughts. Which engine would you go for in the Rangey? The 4.4d or the 3.0d? Or a petrol?
I assume you are aware of the crank issues with the 3.0d? That was a factor for me in baling out of my Disco. Whilst the Cayenne S might have potential issues with transfer cases, unlike the RR it doesn't total the engine when it goes.
I've had an L322 with the 4.4d and it was a lovely engine (although I did feel the earlier 3.6 had more poke low down) despite issues with minor oil leaks. I can certainly understand the appeal of a L405 from a luxury and wafting perspective compared to a Cayenne.

I think id want more than a few k spare in case of a big bill with any of these sort of motors. It’s what keeps tipping me back to something Japanese, as much as my own desired list isn’t dissimilar to yours for a daily. I have been toying with many different things.

Find a Cayenne that has the extended warranty. You can then continue extending it upto 14 years old.KPB1973 said:

It would have to be the 4.4V8 as from what I gather and read it seems the more reliable option, but that would come down to insurance costs in the end, which at the minute are obviously crazy. I've also just watched an interview with JLR's director where he basically says they have no plans to retrofit security upgrades to pre-2018 models at the minute as it is more 'challenging'. Then of course you have the potential for problems, which I am mentally toying with. The RR would be everything I want, but sadly the insurance/theft and potential for mechanical issues are somewhat off-putting when you put it all together. I've read a bunch on RR forums about the crankshaft issue, with many threads getting very heated, so I decided that the V8 would be a better option if I do go down that route.I assume you are aware of the crank issues with the 3.0d? That was a factor for me in baling out of my Disco. Whilst the Cayenne S might have potential issues with transfer cases, unlike the RR it doesn't total the engine when it goes.

A Cayenne does also appeal to me, however from a looks perspective I much prefer the 'newer' models compared to the older ones, but of course these are much more expensive and realistically I can't afford those.
I do like both, but if all was well from a pricing/reliability/security standpoint then the RR would take it for me. I'm still keeping an open mind for others also, but my mind does wander back to RR. It's a tough call to make and I think re-assessing things in a few months time is the right call. If insurance and theft has come down a bit to a reasonable rate, and JLR are actively trying to solve security problems for the pre-2018 models then I may just go for that. Otherwise I'll have to rule it out an that's when Cayenne comes back into the fold. Time will tell!
