I work in the building trade and I’m considering buying an old Cayenne to commute to and from a job for a few months September - December. I usually work with my dad who drives us around but he’s taking a few months out. Using his van is not an option, nor is using my regular car, 718 boxster.

I know it’s silly, that for the price I’m looking, £5k, I could buy a simple run around with no issues at all, or even a decent van.

This is very much a short term fix. Once I’ve done this job, I’ll be looking to sell and get my money back. I don’t want a run around that will be hard to shift for the purchase price or to be lumbered with a van I don’t need. Fuel costs aren’t a problem, there’ll be an allowance.

Does anyone have any experience with them? Or perhaps a better suggestion for a few months? I probably need some sense talking into me tbh.

I ran a 2004 Cayenne S Petrol 4.5 from 2007 -2016. Great car and only the usual problems.

Thanks, what kind of mileage did you get to before selling? I’m seeing 160k on autotrader but I’d be looking to get in at 90-100.

It’s tempting to pick up a turbo for around £8k and put my boxster in the garage until the spring but then I’ve gone from looking for a run around for a few months to looking at a Cayenne Turbo laugh

IIRC I got over 120,000 miles , a friend had a turbo and found it much more expensive to maintain.

I still have a 2008 Cayenne S from new. 285,000km.

-camshaft lifters, big job
-recently had power steering go
-needs flex pipes on exhaust welded...too expensive to replace the whole thing.

About 60,000km was under tow with as car trailer on the back. Overall given the mileage and the rough life it has led it has been exceptional. I am getting a Cayenne GTS this year, but only because I expect the next jobs might be expensive. Runs like a top.

Flex pipes on exhuast welded - I'm in the same boat at the moment, looking for a place that can replace just that section.

Mine's on 135k miles / 216km

To the OP I'd say you need to be prepared for big unexpected bills - it might cost you nothing in 6 months, it might cost £2k all of a sudden - just like any big old barge that was once expensive.

Perfectly timed thread. I quite fancy an old barge and keep seeing these for what seems like ridiculous money. biggrin

If it is "just" £2k every so often I would still consider one. I paid €2k for new suspension on my Audi last year and I must say I quite fancy an old Cayenne or X5 as a daily barge in Spain. Most of them are mega miles and talking to a few people they suggest these should be avoided like the plague. My friend in Dubai bought a cheap Cayenne and was plagued with issues too which didn't help.

This thread is making me rethink that it might not be as disastrous as all that.

I would have thought if ones goes for a low-spec car (e.g. avoiding turbos, air suspension, sunroofs, electric tailgates and towbars, xenon lights etc) it should be possible to have manageable costs over the medium term, especially if the car just used as a runaround.

Mine is a stripper spec..I just wanted the V8 for towing; no sunroof, air suspension, fancy interior, premium sound system, less to go wrong overall,

I've just bought a £4k, 106,000 miler, condition looks good, service history a bit slim or non- existant for the last 30k....wish me luck!

I'm planning on getting an inspection done and decide then whether it's worth getting the engine in top order to match the exterior, which looks great or just run it until it breaks....

The problem seems to be that the labour to check whether the plugs need changing etc, is more than the plugs, and so it begins....and if you do the plugs, new coli packs seems a no brainer.....etc....

Oh, if anybody know if you can check, visually without removing huge amounts of intake piping whether the coolant pipes have been changed, I'd love to know - suspect they must have been at 13 years old, but would be nice to check! Cheers, Ben.

Cayenne is night and day better to drive and more reliable than an x5.

My mate had an early 4.5 v8 for a few years until about 3 years ago. He loved it. Still goes on about it whenever we talk cars. He even bought newer shape diesel version but didn't like it quite as much. Although still says both very good cars. He keeps trying to push me towards 4.8 version as he thinks engine slightly better. Ones we discuss priced more like 15k. His mate has had 2 from new and has test driven different suspension options and claims simple steel springs drive better than air so don't think you're skimping with steel.

Is the 3.2 V6 worth considering?

We had a 3.2 V6 for a few years. They're not much more economical than the V8s which would be the only reason for getting one over a V8.

Had a Gen1 V6. Lovely car, capable of shrinking around you to a sports car smile

Given a free choice, go for a bigger engine that works less hard. The V6, the V8 and the Turbo are not worlds apart in consumption terms. But you'll pay less for a V6. Pays your money...

Thanks both - is the 3.2 reliable?

Just to add - I answered my question from up there - you can check the plastic coolant pipes in the V to see if they have been changed, put you phone on video and wave it around at the back of the block - you can just see the ends of them.

Sadly, mine don't seem to have been done...I'll wait a bit but if the rest looks good then it's probably worth a grand or so for piece of mind....
