has anyone on here got first hand experience of doing big miles in a 3.0d Panamera?

They dont seem to drop much below the £20k mark and have been the same for a couple of years, whereas similar (sport/lux) types of cars have dropped a fair bit 640d / A7 / CLS / Ghibli 3.0d

Has anyone taken one to 150k plus miles without major issues?

Thanks

Hi. I have a 2011 Gen 1 Panemera Diesel, run as a daily drive since 2015. Bought it with 55k miles, now done 155k and counting, and no major issues.

Things I like about it:

1. Very comfortable, can drive for 6+ hours and still feel fresh

2. Fun to drive. Ok it’s no 911, especially with the diesel, but I still enjoy b-roads. Handling is remarkedly good for a 2 tonne big car, you can chuck it round corners and it sticks! Lot less body roll than you’d expect.

3. Its Practical. 42 MPG on mixed driving, 50mpg on motorway. 4 proper sized adult seats. Boot is reasonable size, but sloped window means its not huge. It has variable servicing, which on my mileage seems to want a minor service every year (20k) and major service every 2 years (40k). It occasionally wants a top up of oil, say every 6 months.

Things I don’t like;

1. Pay attention to spec/options, as the standard factor spec is very mean. Everything is optional extra (eg auto dimming mirror, parking sensors, rear camara) so pay close attention to options on used models. Standard radio is weak.

2. It’s wide and long, so find parking spaces not always easy.

3. 8 speed Tiptronic gearbox is sluggish, fine for cruising, but Porsche PDK is much better for sporty driving. Depends how important that is to you.

Costs:

Biggest wear items are brakes and tyres, just due to the size and weight. Brakes every 50k miles, tyres every 25k miles.

I changed the gearbox oil at 120k and 150k as a preventative measure to prolong the triptronic gearbox. Its very expensive job at Porsche dealer, recommend finding a specialist for half the price.

A rear suspension spring broke, very unusual according to the garage, perhaps hit a curb. Not a tricky job to replace.

Air con stopped going cold and needed a new compressor, but not unusual for any 5+ year old car.

Other than that, no issues. Never let me down. No major costs.

I'm a big fan and hard to think what I'd replace it with... maybe another one

Thanks for replying, yours sounds exactly like what i would do in one...

I bet it still looks and drives well with close to 160k miles on

Is it up for sale soon?

I have been following this one closely to learn as much as possible.

I bought a 2012 diesel 15 months ago on 70k, now done 87k & has been faultless.

i would like to run it for another 2-3 years, maybe 15k a year so could end up on 130k+ by then & might be worth less than a 15 year old Kia smile

In my limited experience, I would agree with everything above, it's a pleasure to drive, goes ok & returns decent fuel figures (mostly under 40mpg for me but acceptable). F&R parking sensors on both of mine & I think they should be standard, I wouldn't want a pan without them.

I really like the tip box for local town work and doing the day to day stuff, far better around town than the PDK - but open road & in turbo-nutter mode, the PDK really shows its colours.

Lots of room, looks nice, lovely to drive & hopefully german reliability - not much to dislike is there smile

Do you mind me asking what you paid for it 15 months ago?

I will prob hang on for a few months to see what happens to values after christmas

I will be doing 20-22k miles a year in the car.

I had a 640d sport auto for a year, was great on fuel, looked nice etc but boring to drive..

no problem - I bought it from a dealer, nice tidy car, FPSH, not much in the way of extras other than the alloys, £23k.

It's now on 87k, been no trouble at all & it's being used most days for work (14 mile commute and a bit of local buzzing around seeing customers / and the odd 100 mile round trip to see trade customers). I seem to average 38-40mpg which I am happy with.

My only concern (and maybe yours when you buy one) is doing 15k+ a year in it, if I hang on to it for another 2 yrs, that puts it 120-130k & I think that will hit it's value. The child in me says "sod it" I get to drive a panny every day smile

BMW - my work car for all of the above is / was a 535D - quicker than the Panny by a small margin, same fuel consumption, but just not in the same league (but it's a 12 yr old 190k car, had it for 3 yrs)

The only car I would probably change my diesel panamera for is a newer Merc CLA45 - but I would struggle for space & have to use the BMW more.

Cheers for the info, the mileage is a bit of a concern. Plus i cant help but think a load of the 3.0d's have been clocked, ive not seen any 150k examples for sale which means they are that good people are keeping them....or they could have been tampered with..

The 535d is a great motor, i had the 635d and the 640d with either the same or similar engine, even sounded nice.

Anyone else with experience of an older high miler?

Prices are coming down slightly, and becoming more tempting

Mine is about to hit 90k. Not necessarily high but it’s been a solid car for me.
I’ve just replaced the thermostat and done an 1800 mile tour of Scotland. Three up with luggage and plenty of hooning across the highlands, it’s returned the favour with 42+mpg/730 miles to a tank and absolute comfort, every step of the way.

I’m actually about to put it up for sale but I’ve no idea what to replace it as it’s my daily car.

I've just sold a low mileage Panamera 3.0D (2015+40000 miles) but many of the issues mentioned by others in the higher mileage cars have happened with mine so I think these are common issues with this car.

Good points first:

- A very solid and reliable motor with unnoticable gear changes
- Acceleration when in 2nd gear or above is pretty brutal
- 35 Average MPG. Would get close to 45 on a run but the majority of my driving was in city
- Looks. In the right colour, right alloys and preferably with the quad pipes, it looks a million miles better/more expensive than BMW/Audi/Merc rivals of the same age. You will get alot of looks if you like that kind of thing.
- Very comfortable long distance cruiser and very sporty 911-ish driving position
- Cost £165p/m depreciation in the 28months i owned it- but thats just the market gone mental
- Service every 2 years. Specialist prices quite reasonable and Insurance group quite low (48) .

Bad points from my experience:

- Acceleration from a standstill is average at best. My A7 BiTdi was epic (because it was 4wd probably) but the Porsche isn't one for traffic light grandprix's
- Has to be in Sport mode otherwise it feels very unengaging and slow
- Infotainment a bit dated now. Old school graphics and pixelated rear camera. The sat nav wasn't too bad and the 2nd sat nav screen in the dash really helps. Also had major problems connecting phones via bluetooth.
- Boot. The sharp angle of the rear means its difficult to pack items with any height as the boot won't close. A7 boot was far superior
- Air Con. Just didn't want to work. I tried re-gassing twice but the effect lasted a week at most. Investigation points to a faulty compressor as the most likely culprit but i think its a £1k fix inc. labour
- Annoying electrical niggles. Now this maybe mostly to do with the battery as i tended to not need to use the car for days at a time but i had a boot that remote opened only when it wanted to, a parking break fault message appearing everytime i parked at an angle, remote key fob not working at all even with a new battery- this happened very frequently.
- Boot slide cover not clicking into place properly
- Gearbox cooler oil leak. Supposedly happened by something piercing it but i cannot recollect causing any damage. New cooler+oil £600 via specialist
- Suspension can damage quite easily- first time on any car I had a cracked spring
- Sounds like a 3,0 diesel but the cabin is nice and quiet so you can't hear it

So overall it was a great car and thoroughly recommended and i am sure the car would go comfortably to 150-200k but at that mileage i would want a full service history, making sure the air-con is ok, health check on the brakes/suspension and confirmation of no oil leaks. Also 4 wheel alignment will do wonders to the drive of the car. A rear view camera is also essential as rear visibility is poor.

They are really holding values so I’m sure you will get good money for yours. I’ll hopefully be in a position to change cars in 6 or 7 months and will look properly then...

For now I’m sticking to my 2009 200k mile 635d

Having lent it to friend for a while my 2012 panamera diesel is now back and being used for work and and school runs, travelling around 7000 miles per month.
Swapping the 20” turbo wheels for the 18” comfort wheels has transformed the ride for the better with no trim rattles or drink holder resonance now.

The odometer clocked over the 120000 miles this last week.

It is looked after by highly recommended independent specialists- Porschemode in Bristol.

Reading this, these cars seem less trouble at high miles than when new.

I was put off by a friend who had a 2012 from new which had lots of warranty work done. Suspension, alternator, gearbox issue.

I’ve considered one of these for the last few years. Values have stayed around 20k until very recently you can pick them up for £12k for the cheapest with £15k getting you into a facelift 300bhp model.

Anyone owned both the 250 and 300bhp models?

Wow S8, why so much time deliberating??!

Mines at 165k miles now with no major problems or expense. Have a great independent specialist who looks after things.

It had an ‘eco map’ for obvious reasons and smashes the book mpg into the weeds by a substantial amount.
The 260-300bhp is I believe only software adjustments so not worth getting hung up on, it’s a VW 3.0tdi which is used in many many VAG products so well developed and reliable in my experience

I’ve been happy with the daily driver bmw 3.0d twin turbo and put my money into a couple of classics (R129+Audi 80 sport) that I’ve recently sold, hardly used them. So was thinking to finally change the daily and have one very nice car.
