Well this is the question, which one? One can get great deals on the x3 m40i, bringing it below the price of the base macan. I’d like the macan S but we’re looking at 10k more than the x3 m40i with a few options. Much of the saving comes from the fact the x3 m40i has a good basic spec.

I’ve just had a 2.0 2019 Macan on loan....just before Xmas I had one of the previous gen 2.0 Macan’s on loan. I much preferred the newer car, main reason being it was specced much better and was a much nicer car to drive...Macan’s are great cars but like all Pork need some box ticking to get them to what I would call a “nice spec”. Leather (gets rid of the nasty plastic dash, Air PASM, Panoramic Roof, Seat Heating, Roof Rails (can’t be retrofitted), Dimming Mirrors, Reversing Camera, Bose.

If you have that spec it’s a lovely car and I would say a much, much nicer place to be than the BMW. Engine is plenty fast enough but when revved hard isn’t particularly pleasant, it’s much nicer driven on torque rather than revs!

And ideally also I’d have

Heated Steering Wheel, Privacy Glass, Adaptive Cruise

To be honest for the price of a specced 2.0 2019 car I’d be looking at a used S or GTS, there’s really not that much difference. I’ve got a 2018 Macan Turbo PP....yes the new big screen looks very fancy but I am not sure it makes that much difference....and the 2.0 isn’t that economical. The car I had was averaging 25 mpg in its 3000 miles...not much more than my Turbo PP.

If the bm is 10k less before you have started ticking options on the porsche it going to be much cheaper. Ive had a full day in the x3 m40i thing and its good fun with its sports exhaust. Its going to sound much better than the 2.0 macan i guess.

I would consider the Volvo XC40 T5 as well.

I’d bet the residuals would be far better on the Macan long term in the right soec...

Thanks guys. Yes, I think it’s the box ticking that’s required to bring the Macan up to the starting point for the x3m40i that’s the trouble here. It’s actully looking like a £12,000 price difference now I’ve investigated. Not too worried about residuals, I’ll finance and chuck it back in three years.

I’ve test driven now and it’s clear that I’d have to go for the Macan S for ballpark similar performance to the 3.0l BMW. I do think the Macan feels more premium though - especially with all the options in the demo cars. Tough call but I think I’ll have to go with head over heart here. The final straw was the £2,500 for decent wheels!

I've owned four Macans- SD, Petrol S, 2.0 pre-update and now have the Gen 2 2.0 model which is a great runabout and for my use does the job just fine.

I thought the performance on the 2.0 was little different to the S, having driven 2 S's for a few months, however, my use is restricted to country lanes

But you pay your money etc smile

I was in the exact same boat as you..

I actually had found a pre-reg super spec M40i with all the toys I wanted (driving assistant, panoramic roof and m-sport package). for approximately 17% off. Placed a deposit, was supposed to collect it last week.. and then easter weekend came.. I saw a Macan S on the road that looked MEGA, read too many reviews.. did too much man maths.. and ended up cancelling my deposit and ordering from scratch a Macan S for June delivery.

I think the engine and tech in the M40i win hands down.. I was quoted a residual of 25k on PCP (to give guidance on residual values..) with a list price of 57.9k car.. so not too too bad for a fully optioned car.. but not a patch on the Macan..

Exterior I found a bit bland despite the 21' wheels compared to the Macan, interior with all the tech (so many more gadgets than Macan it's not even funny) would be a nice place to be but it's obvious it can't compete with the Macan in terms of build quality.

What finally did it for me was Macan aesthetics, the whole world swearing it's more engaging to drive than anything but a Stelvio QV (which build quality inside meant I didn't even consider it after driving a Giulia), the quality of the product and undoubtedly the badge. As a long term Porsche guy I just was more at ease with the concept of my first real family car being a Porsche.

Box ticking in the Macan is an exercise of self-restrained.. i ended up having a nice config but with potentially less stuff than the M40i. I had to leave out Sports Exhaust (1.7k for muted performance), sports chrono (do I need launch control in an SUV), Bose (apparently base system is adequate enough), Torque Vectoring (really do I need it in an SUV which will have my family onboard 90pct of the time)...

I didn't compromise on full leather (to get the full Porsche experience, otherwise i would have gone for BMW fake leather and plastics), PASM, ginormous and ridiculously expensive 21' wheels, full assistance tech and all the "needed" bits and pieces (even illuminated courtesy mirrors are optional..) which bring the price to eye-watering levels.

What I noticed is that Macans in the second hand market are often specc'ed in a poverty way.. i.e. big wheels for bling, panoramic sunroof b/c must have.. and then a scattering of things here and there but most lacking bare essentials for a car of this level. I.e. spec'it for the looks and perceived prestige, but with plastic interior, no blind spot monitoring, no camera, no illuminated mirrors, b/c it would make it too expensive otherwise. In that case much better off going for the M40i and get a proper equipped car..
