Considering a cayenne turbo, not a lot of info...
Discussion
I have got to the stage where I'm now talking myself into a cayenne turbo
im torn between a diesel which is fine for 90% of the time, obviously cheaper running costs and then the outright more brutal performance of a turbo. I am also slightly concerned buying a diesel car now, i am seeing a lot of i wouldn't buy diesel type comments so in 3 or 4 years i can imagine it will only be worse.
strangely there isn't a lot of info out there on general running costs and issues, i am talking 2011 onwards model and have seen a very nice 2013 with 50k on it.
It appears the fuel economy is not too bad, i am sure i read a couple of comments on these forums about mid 20's when driven normally which is fine, servicing seems to be the same as a normal petrol v8, intervals are quite big.
What does worry me though is fixing the thing if and when it breaks, are there known issues? what should i look for? This has to be one of the only cars where i cant find a lot out about them. there's a lot of high milers for sale which is a good sign.

I'm not convinced you'd see many "mid 20's" trips out of the 4.8 petrol turbo Cayenne. I have just switched from a v6d to a v8d and done 1200 miles so far @ 27.2mpg average. Yes, I can get low-mid 30's quite easily.. but I'd have to be driving very very lightly. Realistically 27-28 is what I will get in my v8d. I'd imagine my driving would relate to high-teens to low-twenties in a Cayenne turbo - and that isn't driving hard, just average I'd say.
As for diesel - I think there will be a market for big-engined diesels for a good few years yet. Not all of us can afford to feed the petrol-engined-equivalent models, and there is no proper alternative yet. Small-engined diesels - yes, millions of them were produced, and there are now some efficient small engined petrol cars. Big diesels - yes. Small - no.

It was this post which was talking about economy

Its almost a no win situation
smaller diesel engine: i am sure would be fine for almost 100% of use. Just a bit annoying to not have that poke for when you want it, that and the car would see a fair amount of short journeys, not great for the dpf. dpf issues aside probably the most sensible buy, they appear reliable, fairly cheap to run and a very nice place to sit.
bigger v8 diesel: power looks astonishing for what it is! again dpf issues a concern?
petrol v8 or gts: i have read theres not much point, might as well get the turbo, fuel economy being terrible seems a given. doesn't really look any cheaper to run than a turbo.
turbo: brutal power, its going to sound good, possibly a better spec by default, appears to have better economy? biggest worry by far is something breaking, a 4.8 twin turbo isn't going to be cheap to repair. more tyre and brake wear by default too
i haven't even been in one, however a mate had a gl63 which i would imagine would feel similar in terms of power. The way it went up the road was nothing short of hysterical and its made me want a 2 ton beast with 500hp

Most of the time you’ll appreciate 27-34 mpg, very little of your time behind the wheel will you need the more brutal performance of a turbo.
Had a 4.8S which I loved to bits but a regular 17 mpg, 20 on a run takes some stomaching.
I’m not in a V8SD now and I havent had to use all the accelerator travel yet!

Well as an update we've gone for a v8 diesel facelift which i am now actually very excited about
Having watched numerous reviews and read many a thread i dont really see a bad word about them and the deal from porsche was imo too good to refuse! Of course its on finance but its working out cheaper than a merc glc 350d over the same term and miles, i know i know its not new but the low miles and warranty on this one makes up for that, plus its a significantly nicer car.
Its got 90% of the spec i wanted ( i really wanted the 18 way seats, but there are zero for sale from porsche with them in budget) but the rest is specced well.

couple of sleepless nights until collection now
This was meant to be/ is for my wife to use, i can seriously see me making excuses to use it now

Loving mine, pic was for a relaxed drive but similar length spirited journey still produced over 33mpg. Picked it up today and wow what a car, certainly the best ive ever had! The engine is incredible and really doesn't sound or behave like a diesel! The way it gathers speed is shocking tbh and i really need to watch that!
Had a lovely experience with porsche bristol, some amazing cars in there.
I still cant get over the engine
