thinking of changing my 2010 cayenne s for a newer model. Is air suspension and pasm a must on these as it was with the previous generation?

any opinions?

Assuming you mean the latest 2018 / 2019 model, I've only driven a car with the PASM air suspension and 21" wheels. I can't comment on what the car drives like without air, but I can say that with PASM the ride is beautifully controlled. It feels like a big step forward compared to the previous generation version of the air suspension, which I understand is due to the move to 3-chamber air springs. This means the suspension can be lowered without ramping up the spring rate, and the different PASM damper ranges can have different optimised spring rates.

By comparison, my old 2014 Cayenne on 20" wheels with PASM and air suspension was fine in the middle setting, but felt a bit bouncy and wallowy in comfort mode and crashy in the sportiest mode. It was great for self-levelling, and better than the standard steel springs and passive dampers of other Cayennes I test-drove, but not a patch on the new model.

I’ve just collected a 2018 cayenne with PASM and 21” RS spyder wheels. Ride is smooth but I didn’t drive any previous generations before hand.

The test drive (after I’d paid deposit) had air suspension and dealer had me aiming for pot holes and it soaked up all that the UK roads had to offer.

The ride with PASM is good but air suspension (if you want to spec it) is better and more comfortable (let’s face it- it’s what you’d expect!).

I’m happy with normal PASM as I didn’t want to go daft on the spec.

We've got a 2017 Cayenne (so last of the old) it's got the Air PASM. OPC advised that the better drive was the PASM with Steel rather than air and having driven both I'd agree with that. We went with Air because of the ability amongst other things to raise and lower the car. We take the car skiing twice a year with a roofbox on it....some of the apartments we've rented have had underground garages where a 4x4 with a roofbox can't get access....and indeed had the same with a hotel in France we used to use en route.

Worth pointing our perhaps that certainly with the old car the PEC ran cars with the steel suspension for the track work and the cars with Air PASM were the ones used for the off road stuff. Nuff said.

Not driven the latest Cayenne but have sat in the passenger seat of one with the Air PASM. Have to say I didn't think the ride quality was a massive step on from ours. Caveat....need to drive one.
