Hi
I've a 1990 944 S2 that I've had for a year and been tidying up as best I can. I've had some work done on the sills, the roof repainted and generally fixed a few things that needed some love.
I need now to get the car serviced properly and the belts checked. But wanted to check a few things out so know what to expect. Service schedules seem pretty hard to nail down depending where you look.
My car has 204,000 miles with pretty much full history yet it's not had much love over recent years.
The camchains, balance belts and tensioner were for at 146k in 2005
Again the camchain tensioner was replaced in 2008 at 175k
And the clutch was replaced at 137k in 2004.

So as you can imagine I'm starting to panic a little at what may need doing. I spoke to a local specialist who suggested if the belts were over 5 years old he would want to take a look. I really liked him and am glad I have someone nearby but feel I should perhaps brace myself for what these kind of jobs can cost on a 944. Am I right in expecting this car to need at least the belts and tensioner 're doing. And what costs would i expect.

Definitely get the belts done asap plus the waterpump & rollers. £500 ish? A belt failure can be expensive.

The cam chain & pensioners can be inspected fairly easily & I'd be a bit surprised if you needed any work.

Lots of other things to look out for - fuel lines & brake lines for example.

Clutch job is expensive. Sounds like the car has only 60-70k on this clutch so not a lot but obviously depends how the car has been driven

From memory the 944 doesnt have the clutch inspection access hatch thing the 968 does, so I believe to change the clutch you start at the rear bumper and work forwards...

Belts, pump etc well worth doing. And fairly easy. You need a special tool to hold the tensioner rollers while you undo them but you can make one with a lump of y-shaped wood and two nails. Im not joking...!!!

in support of our desires to get away from diesels do you want to repost this in classics and restart?
