Hi all,

I have a dilemma. I'm about to start a lot of long distance motorway driving, and having looked around I've settled on a Cayenne Diesel or Diesel S, and am about to buy a used 2016 or 2017 model.

I'm about to go and test drive some at the weekend, but what are your thoughts on these two cars - is the S really so much better than the base diesel? I know the S has a lot of torque, but is the base Diesel underpowered? And I realise the base Diesel will be slower but more frugal, but what sort of MPG are you getting in these on motorway runs?

Has anyone swapped between the two cars, and can contrast them for me?

Also, is there anything I should be looking out for when looking at these? Any obvious signs of abuse or faults? Any things I should avoid?

If you are looking at these and are using finance you need to get a Cayenne Platinum! They have just been re released and are great on figs. The S is a great car but doesn’t carry a strong enough residual. Every dealer is offering 2.5k deposit contribution and I have one dealer in mind who is doing a further 7k off.

This with 3k from you is a sub 500 per month for a car in excess of 60k.

I have one I’m collecting on Friday for the wife as it’s worked out cheaper than her 5 month old fully loaded evoque - which drove like a bag of st ! I haven’t even gone to the dealer offering the best deal as I have a GT3 coming next month from my dealer and felt some loyalty!

Sounds great..... from where can I get one of these deals? My local OPC hasn't mentioned this.

I’ve had both, sd first then v6d. Do quite a few trips to the SoF each year and the v6 is perfectly adiquate. Yes, the s has a lot more punch and sounds better which may be important for some but the v6 is not too slow and returns reasonable mpg.

Brand new V8 for piece of mind, but a pre add blue V8 is a far nicer car.

I've got an S and love it but I'd say if you're doing a lot of motorway miles maybe the V6 D is the one to go for. We get about 35 mpg out of the V8 on motorway runs.

One thing to consider is that cars registered around September last year onwards will have the updated PCM which is night and day better than the previous PCM (includes Apple Car Play if that box was ticked) and is definitely worth having.

Spec is also very important on these....Panoramic Roof and PASM (either steel or preferably Air) are absolutely must haves for resale and also make a big difference to the ownership experience...especially the suspension.

Had both types, v8 pre ad blue is the one to have. Cracking engine and suits the car perfectly with the monster torque.

I imagine that the pre ad blue car is Euro 5 rather than Euro 6 compliant ? If that's the case I'd probably go with the Euro 6 compliant car.

Thank you all, lots of very useful opinions and I will look into them.

Does anyone know when the engines changed to AdBlue? it sounds like the pre-Adblue ones are maybe a bit better but at the expense of more modern PCM perhaps.

I've also found a dealer with the V6 Platinum cars for sale, so maybe one of those will be enough.

The V6 is fine but if it were me I would go Diesel S every time, I am on my third.

I read somewhere that the engine's 850Nm of torque is the highest of any new car sold in the UK, bar the W12 Bentley's. Not sure if this is still true but gives you an idea of how special the engine is. If driven gentley high 30's possible. They improve significantly with mileage.

2016 gives you Ad Blue which I would consider as legislation is going against older diesels. although the comments on here are correct that the older cars sound better!

What APR are they offering? With only £3k in I cant see how you get under sub £500 a month payment?!

I have the v8 with adblue. I originally ordered my car in July 2015 for delivery October - euro 5 car pre adblue. Delivery was delayed and when I queried why I was told delay due to shortage of parts for the new adblue system, to make it euro 6 compliant. I eventually got my car in May 2016, so guess this is one of the early adblue cars.

I love my Diesel S! Am only 750 miles in.

Was time to change from my SQ5 and with no idea whether the new Cayenne was to come with a diesel (My OPC says they will not) I went for it.

Went for the Platinum Edition as has better residuals and for a decent wedge off as it was a new stock vehicle with dealer contribution.

I would go for a PCM 4.0 car so you have the updated features and can have Apple Car Play

There are good deals out there. Probably not as good as the one mentioned above but I was able to have the pick of 15 Platinum edition 3.0d cars from a dealer last week.

Car arrives in 2 to 3 weeks.

Air with PASM, Pan roof, 21inch wheels, DAB, reversing camera, sports tailpipes and heated steering wheel. Looking forward to it.

I bought one new in Jan last year and got a good deal pre registered but any thoughts on £3k deposit and £500 per month - Id like to see the caluculations

Example - At say £67000 over 48 months
£3000 deposit
Balloon will be about £35000 (what car is worth in 4 years to Porsche)
Borrowing £64000 at current APR which is 5.91%
Monthly payment is £852.24

If you want £500 per month on the above you need to be putting in £18000 deposit.

A Porsche is never going to be cheap and because of the poor residuals compared to cars like 911 GTS' which can cost much much less to buy on finance, they are a lot more expensive due to the depreciation. That's why Porsche dish out GT3's allocations to customers who buy the depreciators.
