Hi guys.

Wanted to know if anybody a) knows this car - it's clearly a PHers ex car (the huge sodding PH logo sticker gave it away) and b) what do you think of it as a track slag?

I'm looking to get into doing some track days, I'm a beginner. I don't fancy tracking the DBS or 997 turbo as a) it costs a fortune to insure for track cover, and b) I'm a beginner and will very likely do some damage eventually. Not to mention the cost of consumables.

I expect that a few track days and I'll be quids in on a car like this vs. tracking one of my current motors.

What do we think?

True.

I may be selling my 944 S2 race car later in the year, ground up bare shell built for PCGB club championship but also road legal. That car in your link is pretty close on race car money but will not compare IMHO. Although having said that the price looks entirely fair in the current market for what may be a well up together car as personally I think the value should be entirely down to condition and at this time after a couple of decades will come down to how much time and money has gone into the car.

OTOH you have to decide if you really want to track a rwd Porsche if just starting out with trackdays. Loads of guys go with properly cheap cars like clios and MX-5s, my almost stock Megane R26 is as fast on track as my race car (its blooming bonkers the Megane) but is basically a £5k fully usable day to day car. You can learn tracks and push hard more quickly and safely in the fwd hatches, especially in bad weather. Lots to think about. Having said all the above, a few guys I raced with felt the S2 in race car form was pretty much the perfect balance of power, nice handling and grip from the whole series of 924 through 968. Probably still the best pork out of all of them over the years from which to make a cost effective track car in terms of price to performance ratio, although we are reaching a period now where 2.7 and Gen II Caymans/boxsters will push that option close in turn for a more road useable setup.

Looks pretty good to me as a starting point for track days. It's road legal which may be an advantage for you over race cars. Even stripped out 944s can be relatively comfy for long distances (spa, ring etc.. ). Sure it won't be as quick, although the 968 motor gives you a few more hp.

May be worth checking the spec of the suspension as it's not listed. I have seen this car on ph but can't remember the username..

Price might be a touch high, but not too bad. Dealer needs a margin though.

Btw, check for rust - can be lurking in sills, suspension mounts etc..

It doesn't fill me with enthusiasm, although I do like the Porsche script embroidery on the seat. Unlike Neil and Ed, I think that it is speculatively priced and far too dear for what it is, even when acknowledging that prices have risen (although not nearly as much as advertised prices would have you believe).

No mention of suspension (which is expensive and in an advert which lists a new battery as a selling point) and more tellingly, a cheapo bodged-in rear cage.

Between the harness mountings and the comical cage I'd say that that car will do its very best to kill you in the event of a crash. Its a 'track' car built by people with little idea what theyre doing, and/or very little money.

I agree it's not a price a yorkshireman would pay... it's more than a private sale price but dealers will try to make a margin (and who pays sticker prices?). I mentioned the suspension - at that price you'd expect something decent.

I had discounted the half cage and harnesses, I'd just use a 3 point belt tbh.

I'd get £5k tomorrow for my s2 track car, (people who drive it always want to buy it) - well once it's had a new clutch smile

And Id pay that, but your car is a different proposition. Still not a Yorkshireman, although I do wholeheartedly embrace their frugal philosophy... biggrin
