porsche obviously made a few of the early 928s with 5spd...and I'm aware of the GT variant....but with respect to the S4 model.. I've never actually seen a 5spd.

can anyone point me to production data that highlights s4 volumes by transmission type.....Ideally by steering wheel and year of production?

Before the GT was introduced Porsche built the Club Sport model in very limited numbers and also an SE version again in very limited (42?) numbers.

Cheers Ras - I'm assured that the car I am looking at is neither a CS or an SE...methinks perhaps it is a manual conversion despite the suggestions of the owner. is there any way to tell (as in, any vehicle plates that would identify this...in the absence of documentation)?

May be of some help if you know the year, engine and gearbox numbers. Porsche could tell you by the VIN of course.

Note that the date column is one year out, so S4s with a manual gearbox that were not GTs were mainly manufactured in 1988 and a few in 1989.

without wishing to offend anyone.....is there a chance that if you have an s4 that is not a cs or an se....and is an 87 or 88 model....that its actually an aftermarket conversion?

Apart from the GT model all the S4 manual cars used engine code M28/41 while auto cars used engine type M28/42. I don't know the physical differences but it should be easy to deduce from that if a conversion has been done.

I just missed out on an S4 Manual, someone placed a better offer. They are rare birds indeed
