So would really appreciate some advice here, the kids are off to uni. And my wife has a four seater car so it's time to get rid of the 4x4 and get something else. The only real caveat is that I don't want to spend too much and it has to be able in fit a small windsurf in (a standard size golf does with the passenger seat reclined and the back seats down so I imagine a 924, 944, 968 etc would). I do have a 911 but that doesn't fit the surf board in, and I probably wouldn't fancy putting it in, so something maybe sub £10k
Suggestions very much appreciated...

Friend of mine had a 944 from new to 1993, specifically for his surfing weekends. Seemed to be the perfect mix of performance & practicality for his board and wax smile

A 928 makes an excellent van.

944 would be ideal, deeply regret selling mine.

911 with a roof rack, although doesn't meet the cheap criteria.

Not sure any windsurf board is going to fit IN a Porsche sports car.

If you've already got a 911, I'd get roof bars or a hot hatch.

They do indeed.
Although a sub-£10K example is likely to be a project.

Thanks for the responses, pretty good, I would stick a roof rack on the 911 but it looks rubbish and driving down to the coast with something on the roof is a pain, but if it's inside you can have a good driver as well. I think the 944 sounds like a good bet, I have always had 911's but I have always thought the balance of a 944 with the engine in the front and gearbox at the rear must be great.

Question is how much should I pay and what model to go for. It seems the prices are everywhere???

Yes - prices are all over the place. As is condition . . .

Which is why I would argue that you should buy on condition rather than model - unless you want/can afford a Turbo, which are pretty much the dog's bks.

An S2 is a better car than a 2.5 n/a "Lux" (I have a Lux!). But a well maintained 2.5 with impeccable history will be a joy to own and a bodged neglected S2 a frustrating nightmare money pit.

I bought my 2.5 about six years, great car in a crap colour (Crimson Red - probably works in California but too brown for cloudy Britain), inches of invoices, thirty-something stamps in the service book. Never let me down and no major bills, except for sills and colour change respray two years ago. Interior next on the list.

Afterthought . . . 968?

944s are great, completely different to the 911 so you can live with both and unbelievably practical. We ran ours as a daily family car for two years, holiday, picking up Christmas trees etc. Bought home a huge desk in the back, bikes .... You would get a board in, the mast not sure, you would have to check.

As said, buy on condition, prices have shot up but they are still cheap, other than the turbo. Rust in sills, bottom of front wings, rear suspension mounting points are things to look out for. As wth anything else this age, get a good guide and look at many. No two are likely to be the same.
