Contemplating getting another Cayenne as the family bus (missing my old one!)

Looking at circa 2008/2009 4.8 GTS or Turbo. Has anyone driven both, which did you prefer?

Not convinced by the external look of the GTS (a little tacky) but would imagine its a little more sporty to drive. I do like the idea of the additional torque of the turbo.

I'm aware that economy & running costs on both will be terrible!

When I was looking for a Cayenne circa 2007-2009 I ended up buying the V6 3.6 ltr as it fitted my requirements although I did look at all variants of the Cayenne. When I was doing my research I found that although the S the GTS & the Turbo are all V8's its only the Turbo block that doesn't suffer from the nikasil problem (along with the V6). So if I were going to go down the V8 route I'd go Turbo. Although if I were you I would still look into that issue further as I wouldn't want a large engine rebuild bill just after I'd bought my new car. Good luck.

Thanks, I was under the impression that the bore scoring was only on the earlier 4.5 V8 blocks and not an issue on the 4.8?

Actually, did they fix the coolant issues out by the 4.8 or do they still run the earlier plastic pipes as per the 4.5?

Cheers

As I said I would still look into this if I were you as I stopped looking once I had decided to buy a V6 (like I said previously I new bore scoring was not a problem with the V6's). Sorry can't help re coolant issues.

There's a advert with a 4.8 with coolant pipes listed as changed.

Bore scoring doesn't affect the Turbo. Make sure the coolant pipes have been replaced though. The original Turbo pipes are plastic and will crack due to high temperature. A replacement can be quite expensive and for me would be reason to walk away.

Lot of bks spouted by internet these days.

This is my Latest which has a rare 6 speed manual…Great fun!!
Previously had a silver 4.8 Tip GTS. I prefer the Manual which is only available on the GTS

Note. 2009 on has Touchscreen which is much more user friendly.

4.8's to my mind don't suffer from water pipe issues.
Cardan shafts are a few hundred quid to repair.

Personally the last 2 I have had have been more reliable than any previous car I have owned previously (touch wood)

Their only vice is thirst!

The last 2 have been GTS's If you want an extra 100hp buy a turbo. In my mind though the turbo feels a bit laggy and detached. The old Tip box is a generation behind the times and spoils a fantastic car. in my view anyhow.

PASM, PDCC and full air is a must.

I have a Turbo as my daily drive, for the last 2 1/2 years. 57 facelift model. Think it is an incredible machine. I fitted a MoBridge system to upgrade for Bluetooth and IPod connectivity. All steering wheel controls work and compatible with the Bose sound system. Done around 40k miles, now at 97k. Only issue I had was a faulty camshaft oil feed actuator on the left bank..fixed under warranty. Very rare problem, so a little unlucky I guess. Other than that sweet as a nut. You can smooth around very sedately or press the Sport Button...watch your hair catch fire! It becomes an animal. Economy?...not applicable. I average about 16.5-17mpg travelling 16 or so miles each way to and from work, but on a run I can get just over 20mpg. Sport mode and enthusiastic pressure on the loud pedal = thirst of alcoholic proportions, but the smile on your face makes you forget about that detail. Superlative engineering and logic defying performance and handling for what is the Porsche equivalent of an aircraft carrier.

My wife drives a GTS, she loves it as it's the antithesis of "girl car", it looks evil and makes a noise that sounds like a sherman tank on full chat!

I have to say, having driven both before we bought it, we went for the GTS. Can't disagree on the comments re the turbo, but the GTS was just more linear, and had just a little something that the turbo didn't - more sporty looks, a nicer interior (I like alcantara) and an exhaust sound that is insane. And it's quick... plenty quick!

As a daily drive it averages about 17mpg (tells you how my other half drives too!) but it's worth every penny.
