Hi all,
I have become victim of the usual leaking tank syndrome of the 944 (1982 S1). I ordered a used but 'not leaking' tank from eBay, took the transaxle out, took the old one out, prepped the new one, fitted it and.... it leaked. What a waste of time. Anyway, I am having trouble finding a decent one locally, but have my eye on one at the moment which came from a 924 Turbo. However it looks very similar, but not identical. Notably the one I have my eye on has no plastic breather pipe (see first photo), like my current tank (second photo). I have no pictures of the rear but does anyone know if it will fit and work as I would really like the tank if it fits, but don't want to waste my money if it doesn't. Thanks!

Just have the one you removed stripped/dipped, welded and powdercoated and it will be good for another 20 to 30 years at least.. Once you do, keep it full of fuel and it will not rot out again.

Thanks. Will bear this in mind, but mine at the moment is particularly leaky, and weeps from quite a large area so welding might not be the answer.
We got another that must have got cracked in transit around where the fuel outlet is. A really difficult place to weld and can't really see exactly where the leak is coming from.

I'd rather have the new tank in good condition in the first place and treat that, so wondering if this 924 Turbo tank will fit a 944 (the minor differences in pipes on the top being the sticking factor).

Especially if I have it stripped and powder coated!

As a rule, all the pre 86 tanks can be interchanged, I have put a 944 tank into 2.0 924, and the other way round, but never have put a 24 turbo tank into a 944..

It should fit fine, but I can not guarantee it will be a straight swap as the 924 turbo transmission that the tank sits above is a completely different shape to the 924 2.0, 924S and 944 transmission.

I good welder who works on fuel tanks on a regular basis should be able to restore your old one, I have used TricketWelding in Dorset a few times who have done an awesome job, they list fuel tanks as one of their specialties as well as VW Camper van restoration (Maybe they had to become fuel tank specialists?!?) redface)

Thanks again, that certainly sounds like a plan. There is a specialist about an hours drive from me so that's not too bad (http://www.a-tm-engineering.co.uk). I may opt for getting a ali tank with baffles that can be bolted into the floor and also strapped. At least that way it will literally never corrode smile
