Porsche Panamera steering judder
Discussion
Hello,
My Porsche Panamera has a very disturbing steering judder at full lock or close to full lock. I know that this is not unique to my car and I am sure has been brought up before. I would be grateful to know if anyone has had the same problem and somehow has been able to 'cure' it. It would also be valuable to hear about any contacts with Porsche about this problem and their stance and help.
A friend of mine also drives a Panamera but has not encountered this phenomena. He has Michelin tires fitted and I have Pirelli. It has been mentioned by a Porsche engineer that the Michelin tyres are much better in this respect with the Pirellis having more grip and thereby is more prone to skidding/judder (Ackermann effect).
Possibly also the size of the wheel can play a part?
The Porsche reply to my problems is that there is nothing wrong with my car and therefore no need for any remedy. They are refusing to change my tyres from Pirelli to Michelin (my car is brand new).
I find the judder very disturbing and do not accept Porsche's stance.
Any comments/advice would be very welcomed.
Best regards

Exactly the same thing happens with my 991 c4s. I bought it new in Nov 13 and I couldn't believe how bad it was and how Porsche could release a design like that. Then in the summer it disappeared completely only to return now it's cold again. People may say it affects lots of cars but I've never had it before on any of mine (non Porsche)
Picked my son up from school the other day and he said "what on earth is that" as it juddered out of a parking space. It does it in reverse full lock also. I've also had it pulling out of a side road in the cold and it juddered (under steered) it's way towards the opposite kerb until I let off the power.
I've got Pirelli and I wonder if another make would be any better? Either that or wait for the weather to warm up!

Thank you all for your input.
I am fully aware of the Ackermann aspect but I have driven a few cars in my time including trucks and buses but never experienced anything like this. My wife actually (it is a new car)told me not to drive the car, she was worried that it would damage it. And so did I.
The assurance from Porsche is that it will not damage the car but could possible cause some wear and tear. The very pungent point I have is that some Porsche owners do not have this problem (like my friend) and that there must be some substance behind it! He is driving a Porsche Panamera with Michelin tyres and I am driving with Pirelli tyres!
So perhaps this is the solution? The steering judder is not acceptable.

Jackal,
It all depends on the degree of judder. Mine is severe and not something that I can ignore. I will do what can be done to reduce it with a swap of tyres being high on the list. Especially with one of my friends driving a Panamera with Michelin tyres and not experiencing this disturbing phenomena. Some of input above seem to tell the same story.

Hi
I had a Panamera Diesel on loan for about 1 Month (I requested this) whilst my previous Cayenne was in having an Oil Leak sorted.
I would have purchased one to replace the Cayenne but could not live with the "Judder/Tyre Scrabble" you mention - ridiculous everything else about the car was spot on but this one niggle would have spoilt my living with the car for me (I keep them 3 Years on average)
I purchased a facelift Cayenne instead...!

I had exactly this too. No way could I live with that especially on a 80k car. The one I was lent did have huge alloys on so may be different with 19"wheels. I had a Panamera Diesel on loan for about 1 Month (I requested this) whilst my previous Cayenne was in having an Oil Leak sorted.

Reminded me of my Max power days with lowered suspension and big alloys!
Also know someone who has just taken a Maserati Ghibli back with the same problem.
Thank you all for your valuable input. Good to know that I am not the only one with this problem.
The more input we have on the effect of changing tyres the better. I will as I have said change the tyres to Michelin and I will certainly let you know the outcome. The swap will most likely be done in a month's time due to going abroad for a few weeks.

I have the Porsche Panamera steering judder on my Panamera purchased a year ago from main dealer in Tewkesbury .Love everything else about the car but when the temperature drops Oct--March on full lock you tend to bounce into your intended direction.
When I notified the dealer I purchased the car from they said it is normal omitting to tell me of the issue prior to purchasing as did my servicing main dealer. Very disappointing on such a prestigious car, also just purchased new Michelin tyres for the car and worry about excessive wear on front tyres which I will keep my eye on.
Any advice would be welcome

I used to get this graunching noise on my 997 Turbo but it is worse/more noticable on my new Panamera 4 E-Hybrid. It is only apparent during low speed manoeuvring on full lock. I am guessing it is to do with the front drive shafts being at the angulation limits for constant speed joints plus limited slip on the differential from different rotation rates due to Ackerman steering. I suspect it is made worse by the 21" wheels and tyres, compared with the 19" of my 997. I am relieved to hear that it is "normal" and I will remove it from the list of minor niggles which need sorting out, mostly inconsistent operation of the the powered tailgate and things related to that (charge port cover sometimes not unlocking, when only tailgate unlocked).
