Somebody here must know if this is a genuine plate. There can't be that many 928s about - what do you think - real number / coincidence or a set - up?

According to the plate history, the car has held that number since 2001.

+1

The information regarding the number plate registration date was posted on www.928.org.uk one day before the Guardian news article.

Yep, intentionally. No matter how inappropriate the cars appear, the make/model was intentionally chosen. They weren't chosen because they came with silly number plates.

if Top Gear specifically wanted a manual GT 928, there's not many RHD available in the UK to choose from

I don't think it was a coincidence. I think they saw the car and plate by chance, and thought, "Hey, let's take this to Argentina!"

The mistake they made was to try and cover it up. They should have said, "Of course it was joke, but the Argies have no sense of humour."

Yes, but they have not said if the plate actually belonged to THAT car.

Would it be possible for them to mimic a license plate - just for the show?
i.e. They could have a similar car the plate on the car, dual-platter?

It would be inconceivable to believe that it was a coincidence.

2 cents.

Can you explain why a lancia is an inappropriate car to take to Africa. ( serious question, I don't see the issue)

He means inappropriate as in unsuitable.

Didn't they buy those cars in Africa? Including the Mercedes and old Opel?
