Early Cayennes

Hi all. I'm having a mid life crisis and to aid this, I'm considering an early Cayenne. There's one for sale close to me privately at £8000. It's a 4.5 S Tiptronic.

Its done 76k and looks at first glance to be pretty immaculate for the age.

Is there anything I need to look at in detail when I go and view it? He says on the phone that he's owned it since 2009 and he sounds pretty genuine (his house is nice!)

He says he gets 20mpg from it, but TBH I don't do many miles now, so I don't really care too much about MPG. He also says the VEL is £280 for the year which isn't too bad either.

Any comments?

I135000 miles on my 2003 Cayenne S which I've had for 5 years. Make sure the coolant pipes have been upgraded. The early cars have plastic pipes in the V of the engine which corrode. upgrades to the later pipes solve the problem however it can be pricy. Otherwise it has been very reliable mechanically. I have been told other cars are very heavy on tyres however it as not been an issue for me. Recently a few electrical issues have started creeping in. The drivers side window does not open, the wing mirrors have a mind of their own and we have replaced a few motorised fans under the dashboard for the AC. The boot struts also have become weaker. I hope this very unscientific guide helps!

Well I've been to see it and agreed a price of £7500. What a lot of car for the money! The thing is solid......just like a Porsche should be built. I was worried that the build quality wouldn't be there given that it's based upon a VW tourag but that's not the case. Only 70,000 miles with FPSH so hopefully should be fine. I'll have a look at those hoses asap thanks for the advice.

And what an engine! 4.5 petrol mixed with the 4wd was amazing, even in the wet like tonight.

Picking it up tomorrow..........even though I've had cars costing 4 times more expensive than this in the past, I'm actually really excited about this as I've never had anything this sort of size before!

Now considering upgrades for it lol. Front bumper seems like first step followed by some 22"s........BLING

What was the Cayenne model that suffered from the bore wear that led to engine failures from 35000 miles to 70000 miles? I know it wasn't the turbo or V6.....it certainly put me off buying one...tons of horror stories on the fora...first sign is an audible clicking from the engine.

Eta...just read the Evo article and yes, it's the V8 in the 4.5S....I recall enquiring about one that had a replacement engine at 70,000 miles...problem was it was a secondhand engine...and therefore a good chance the problem would manifest itself again!

Odd reports of engine failures ( a tiny proportion ) but generally very reliable.
Usual faults seem to be plastic water pipes perishing, drive(Cardan) shaft bearing failure, water pumps at high mileages and rain drain blockages.
A worthwhile job on your new purchase, with all the rain we've been having, would be to check the front rain vents. When blocked with leaves/debris the water builds up and can be heard sloshing about from inside the cabin.
Under the front arches, turn the wheel out. 10 mm socket take off the 2 nuts. Undo the back and mid torx head screws (about 8 of them) and a tricky one underneath. This will have loosened the wheel arch plastic liner.
From underneath push the liner forward , reach up a whole arms length and find a soft rubber grommet/open ended plug.
Pull it and experience a moment of joy as litres of rotten water pour down your sleeve, oh how I laughed !




The offending grommet ! Easy job if you take the whole arch liner out, a bit more awkward leaving it in situ but easily doable at home.

I've just bought a 2005 Cayenne S with 50,000 miles, it had a slight hesitation sometimes and I read the ignition coils have been a problem. Anyhow 8 new coils, 8 new plugs and 300 quid later it is like a different car and really smooth, worth checking out the coils as the early ones crack. I have 22 inch bling wheels too!

That looks lovely. Will replace the Grand Cherokee with one of these in time.

Cant be many in burgundy with biscuit leather.
