Why are so many of them lacking automatic climate control? Does it add extra weight so not many people specced it?

Yes it adds a bot if weight and 981s had a free aircon and radio delete option to get weight down. With hindsight it was 2015/16 and a lot of white abd yellow cars and tge clubsport option was the mist have. They were also a cheaper car aimed st tracking. My 981 is tge badic air con and is excellent !!

Back in the day the 981GT4 was a relatively cheap car, track focused and at the top of the Cayman range none of which had climate as standard. The standard air con incidentally is pretty good and the only real benefit of climate is the ability to vary side to side. It’s such a small cabin that I doubt it makes that much difference. I actually prefer the appearance of the climate center console which is about the only reason I specified it on my very early GT4, but then I am a tart as well.
The 718 GT4 did move up a bit in pricing so it looks more of an omission in that car. Porsche being stingy as usual. I wouldn’t mind betting that the climate option take increased in the later years.

How common/rare is the aircon delete?

I wouldn't buy a car without Climate Control. Yes it can vary the temperature on each side but it's purpose is to maintain the temperature set, adjusting fan speed and hot/cold air automatically. Basically you set the temperature you want have it in auto and just forget about it.

It was an extra cost above manual AC and perhaps some buyers don't understand the difference and sales staff don't highlight the benefits? Or they don't want to pay for it and are happy to mess about adjusting the temperature and fan speed against gauges that have no reference apart from min/max.

It's like some owners who only switch on AC in summer or hot weather. Wrong. It's designed to be on all the time to purify the air taking out moisture and reducing condensation.

When you say relatively cheap, my old 2016 MY, with most of the desirable extras (including dual zone climate), was about £80k new. I paid £85k for it in October 2018. Either way around, that's about £106k today with inflation accounted for, so not exactly cheap. I'm not sure the 718 GT4 really was that much more expensive in real terms.

I've seen a few with the basic aircon, but more with dual zone climate. Have never seen one with the aircon or radio delete option. I'm guessing pretty rare.

OPs question is rather ambiguous.....does it mean complete deletion of AC or mere AC or thirdly Climate these are the 3 options.

Many 981 GT4/Spyder in particular have just AC and not climate which was a c £500 extra c £550 on the 718 GT4/Spyder although there are more 718s with climate than 981s.

The standard AC works fine I've specced it on my new 2015 981 GT4 and my new 2015 981 Spyder and having run both cars for c 2 years I can confirm it is a decent system furthermore if it works well in the convertible Spyder....this is the ultimate test of efficency tbh.

Specced climate in my 718GT4 only because most buyers of 718 GT4s and Spyders now expect it as an option and a car without it is a tougher sell.

Wouldn't touch a car with AC delete btw it would be a very hard sell indeed.

My 981 GT4 didn’t have climate control, just basic AC, and having to regularly change the temperature setting, versus set it once and never touch it, was a bit of a pain. It wouldn’t stop me buying an otherwise perfect car though.

I meant why do so many only have basic A/C rather than automatic climate control. I didn't know that A/C delete was an option until it was mentioned in this thread.

In a 987 Cayman I find the basic A/C to be quite annoying and usually adjust the temperature scale at least a couple of times every drive.

I didn't spec dual climate on my 718, back in '22, mainly because my car is a 3rd car used for weekend fun, but also I objected to paying 'Porsche tax' on something that really should be standard on a car of that price.

2.5 years down the line, the standard A/C and controls have been fine, and I honestly have no regrets in not speccing dual climate. I can't think of a situation when I would have benefitted from having it, and that's after driving mine in cold weather, warm weather, road, and track use.

To me, there's lots of noise on here about it being essential etc etc, but IMO the reality is it's really only going to be one of those things that benefits a daily driver. But that's not what a GT4 is for.... getmecoat

I don't care about dual-zone at all, but I much prefer automatic climate control.
