Morning al
I have a 2017 718s

I had a bit of a strange one over the weekend.

I started the car and it sounded very rough no warning light, i pulled out of the drive onto the road thinking it will clear itself but once on the road a warning message came on the dash (i wasn't able to read it 100%) i think it said ''engine control unit issue drive with caution''.

I turned around (only drove 100 yards) and parked up.

Someone who saw me leave said there was smoke coming from the exhaust when i left.

This morning i checked the oil levels and that seemed ok and there was no leaks or oil drips under the car.

Turned ignition on and no warnings or anything, started car and all seemed ok.

I took it for a drive and it seemed to drive ok.

The only thing now is i think the engine sounds different but i am not sure if its just me because i had the issue or if it really does sound different.

I spoke to the garage i use (unfortunately 70 miles away so he hasn't seen it) and he thinks its the AOS (air oil separator), he says there are a lot of problems with the AOS.

I have since borrowed a (Basic) code reader which has come up with nothing and took it for a good drive and all seems fine.

It seems to replace one on a 718 its the best part of a full days work (labour) so nt a cheap job to do.

I guess my question is has anyone else had one go or have had a similar issue on start up, what can i do here to check if this is the issue and i guess most importantly is it safe to drive the car?

any insight would be great.

Could it be a coil pack?

Could be, but it could be all sorts. I think AOS less likely, because I'm not sure how the electronic control system would know from a cold start, or why it might cause a misfire. It can certainly pick up a coil pack fault though.

OP, probably best not to conject too much until it has been seen by someone that knows what they are looking at. I'll keep my fingers crossed that it's neither complex nor expensive.
