How does a short shifter change the experience in a 987?
Discussion
Shortens the throw, adds a bit more weight and effort, makes the shift a bit more precise and the end points of the gate / throw better defined, but doesn't get rid of the lateral play.
Subjective, but I'd say it turns what is a mediocre shift as standard into a reasonably nice, but still not exceptionally good, shift. As above, it does add a little effort, especially pushing through the detent into reverse. So, if you prefer very light shifters, probably won't be for you. Other than that, it's a very good value little tweak.

I think the 997.2 GT3 shifter is the nicest, not as short as the ssk, but all metal parts and nice rifle bolt change without it being harder to shift.
997.2 GT3 shift (997 424 010 91)
997 short shift (997 424 983 00)
Other option is Alex on 911uk.com forums does a cracking SSK, using lots of metal insert parts. it is even better again imho and around £150, you use your old case.

see I think the GT3 one is too long and is not a short shift.997.2 GT3 shift (997 424 010 91)

I balled raced a 997 Short Shifter and then fitted solid end ends to the gear box, it's a very very nice shift action and no play.

On that note re solid ends etc, I had a modified standard shift fitted to a previous 987. It had all the plastic bushings and bearings replaced with metal. The shift itself had no play. But fitted to the car it barely made any difference. Car had standard factory cables and ends. So, yes, you'll need solid ends etc to remove all the play.I balled raced a 997 Short Shifter and then fitted solid end ends to the gear box, it's a very very nice shift action and no play.
And would tend to agree the GT3 shift is a bit long. The factory short shift has a nice throw, wouldn't want it any longer.
In terms of cheap and easy, just swapping in a factory short shift does improve the shift. Still has a fair bit of lateral play, but it's a reasonably enjoyable shift if you want to keep things simple and not get involved with new cables / ends etc.
